Bombay Bloomers Hits Neutral Bay

By June Ramli

Sydney, Nov 20: Neutral Bay has a new reason to dine out with Randwick favourite Bombay Bloomers opening its second outpost on Grosvenor Street.
I visited the restaurant yesterday and, despite it only having been open for about three months, the dining room was already buzzing for a Wednesday night.
Tucked in among the residential streets, the space feels like a neighbourhood local that’s already been discovered by the locals.

Chef-owner Varinder Singh, who took over Bombay Bloomers in Randwick in 2022, has built a following for Indian food that leans into flavour rather than heavy heat.
The Neutral Bay menu continues this approach, offering a thoughtful mix of North Indian, Punjabi and South Indian dishes.
I started with the Chicken Tikka and Lamb Chooza Tikka (four pieces, $20) – both tender, boneless pieces of meat marinated in yoghurt and spices, then finished in the tandoor.
The chicken was juicy with a gentle smokiness, while the lamb carried a deeper, richer spice profile without being overwhelming.

From the mains, the Lamb Rogan Josh ($28.50) stood out.
Cooked in the traditional Kashmiri style, the lamb was slow-cooked until soft, coated in a sauce layered with warming spices rather than just chilli. It’s the kind of curry you want to mop up completely with naan.
One of the things that sets Bombay Bloomers apart is the way it bridges regional Indian styles.
Alongside the North Indian classics, the menu also ventures south.
I tried a dosa, which arrived crisp and generous, with well-balanced accompaniments.
It’s a welcome inclusion for those who like to wander beyond the usual curry-house staples.

To drink, I opted for a rose lassi instead of cocktails as I was driving.
It was refreshing and fragrant, offering a cooling counterpoint to the spices.
The bar also offers an Indian-inspired cocktail list for those settling in for a longer night.
The setting combines touches of tradition with a modern Sydney polish.
Warm tones, metal accents and polished tableware give the room a comfortable but elevated feel, without straying into formality.
It’s the kind of place that works for both a casual midweek dinner and a slightly more special outing.

Bombay Bloomers’ expansion into Neutral Bay feels like a natural progression from its consistently busy Randwick original. With carefully prepared curries, a menu that respects regional diversity, and a setting that suits the Lower North Shore crowd, this second venue is well-placed to become a local favourite in its own right.
