Sydney, Feb 3: An Australian med-tech innovation has been named a finalist in the prestigious Techquity for Health Case Study Awards at ViVe 2025, a leading U.S. digital health event set to take place in Nashville from February 16-19.
Sydney-based company Sound Scouts has developed a hearing assessment app designed specifically for aged care residents, enabling them to test their hearing using an iPad and simple equipment such as headphones. The app, which integrates gaming technology, provides an interactive and accessible way for older Australians to monitor their hearing health.
Sound Scouts CEO Carolyn Mee emphasized the importance of ensuring equitable healthcare access for all individuals, regardless of age or location.
The hearing test, already widely used in Australian schools, is now being trialed in aged care settings for the first time. In collaboration with the University of Newcastle and Maroba Caring Communities, the technology received support from a grant provided by Aged Care Research & Industry Innovation Australia (ARIIA).
ARIIA Chief Executive Officer Reuben Jacob praised the recognition of Sound Scouts on the global stage, highlighting the impact of digital solutions in improving aged care services.
With more than 65 per cent of adults over 60 experiencing some form of hearing impairment, Sound Scouts’ solution has the potential to reduce social isolation, minimize fall risks, and slow cognitive decline. Its accessibility also makes it particularly beneficial for those in rural and regional areas with limited access to hearing tests.
The app introduces a standardized, evidence-based digital screening process into routine aged care, ensuring compliance with quality and safety recommendations. By integrating testing into clinical dashboards, aged care providers can continuously monitor residents’ hearing health and make data-driven decisions.
Representatives from Sound Scouts will attend ViVe 2025, where the winners of the Techquity for Health Case Study Awards will be announced.
