Barcelona, Feb 1: Areas, a global leader in food and beverage services, has launched SELF, the world’s first robotic restaurant powered by artificial intelligence in an airport. Located at Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat Airport, the innovative eatery is situated in Terminal 1 near Gate B24 and spans 137 square meters.
SELF is designed to enhance the traveler experience by combining automation with human assistance, ensuring efficient service while offering popular airport food choices such as premium sandwiches, salads, pastries, soft drinks, and fresh daily-prepared meals.
Innovation in Travel Dining
The project is the result of years of market research to meet the evolving needs of modern travelers. Developed using Spanish innovation and engineering, SELF incorporates a robotic arm with five tactile fingers, allowing it to manage multiple orders simultaneously. Customers place orders through an interactive kiosk, receive a QR code and ticket, and are notified when their meal is ready.
SELF also optimizes inventory management using advanced AI and machine vision technology, adapting to real-time demands to improve speed and efficiency. While automation drives the process, human staff remain available to assist with dining and takeout orders.
Sustainability at the Core
In alignment with Areas’ “Areas for Change” sustainability strategy, the SELF facility incorporates energy-efficient LED systems, 100 per cent recyclable FSC-certified paper packaging, and organic cotton uniforms designed in collaboration with Clothink.
A Landmark in Airport Innovation
The collaboration between Areas, Aena, and key industry partners has brought this cutting-edge concept to life at one of Europe’s busiest airports.
Sergio Rodríguez, CEO of Areas Iberia, emphasized the significance of this milestone, stating:
“This project marks a milestone in food & beverage and travel retail and reaffirms our entrepreneurial spirit, capacity for innovation, and transformational vocation to lead new trends in the industry.”
By pioneering AI-driven automation in airport dining, Areas continues to shape the future of the travel hospitality sector with innovative service models and advanced technology solutions.
