Kuching, March 22: The Rainforest World Music Festival (RWMF), now in its 27th year, announces its much-awaited return in 2024 with the theme ‘Evolution’.
This event, presented by the Sarawak Tourism Board (STB), is a cornerstone in the world music calendar, known for its eclectic mix of global music talents and its dedication to the principles of environmental conservation, cultural appreciation, and responsible tourism.
Amidst the enchanting natural beauty of Sarawak, the festival is set to unveil a lineup that boasts 20 acts, bringing together 68 international musicians from 14 different countries across six continents, alongside 63 Malaysian artists.
This assembly of diverse musical traditions promises a fusion of sounds, offering attendees a unique opportunity to experience global musical heritage in the heart of the Borneo jungle.
The combined acts are followed by a global fanbase of 12 million across various digital platforms, including Spotify, YouTube, Instagram, Twitter (X), and Facebook, setting the stage for a truly international celebration.
Leading the array of performers is Kitaro, the Grammy and Golden Globe-winning Japanese artist known for his pioneering work in electronic-instrumental music.
Making his RWMF debut, Kitaro is expected to deliver a spellbinding performance that will take audiences on an ethereal musical journey.
He is joined by Malaysia’s celebrated artist Datuk Zainalabidin, whose timeless hit ‘Hijau’ has made significant contributions to the genre of World Music in Malaysia.
Highlighting the local talent, Belle Sisoski from East Malaysia will share her musical explorations that delve into indigenous rights and environmental conservation.
Sisoski, at the young age of 18, has already made her mark on the international stage, securing the second place with her song “Stop Your Games” in the Commonwealth Song Contest.
The festival’s lineup also includes a variety of international and local acts such as Alright Mela Meets Santoo (Pakistan/France), Bourbon Lassi (Australia/Malaysia), and The Borneo Collective from East Malaysia, which presents a pioneering project named ‘Soul of Sarawak’.
This initiative will showcase Sarawak’s traditional instrumental mastery, accompanied by a selection of Malaysia’s finest musicians.
Datuk Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, the Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry & Performing Arts Sarawak, expressed his enthusiasm for this year’s theme of ‘EVOLUTION’, highlighting the festival’s commitment to blending sustainability, responsible tourism, and cultural exchange.
