Perth, Sept 15: Perth Zoo has confirmed an unlawful break-in at its crocodile exhibit in the early hours of Monday morning, during which resident saltwater crocodile Dangalabba sustained minor injuries after intruders scaled purpose-built perimeter fencing to access his habitat.
In a letter sent to supporters, the Zoo said animal care staff discovered upon starting their shift that back-of-house areas of the crocodile exhibit had been unlawfully entered overnight.
Offenders reportedly forced their way into a secure management area before climbing perimeter fencing designed to protect the animals and preserve the integrity of their enclosures.
An investigation found that Dangalabba suffered minor superficial injuries as a result of the intrusion. The Zoo said he is okay and is being closely monitored by veterinary and animal care teams, describing his recovery as going well.
Zoo management described the incident as reckless and completely unacceptable, saying it caused harm to an animal and could easily have ended in tragedy.
They stressed that the habitats are not spaces for trespassing or stunts, and that those involved showed a disregard for animal welfare, personal safety, and the staff who care for the animals daily.
WA Police were notified immediately and responded swiftly, with their investigation leading to the arrest of two suspects.
Perth Zoo said it is continuing to assist police with their enquiries.
The Zoo noted it already has extensive security measures in place, including perimeter security, surveillance systems and after-hours monitoring, but is now conducting a full review of the incident to determine whether additional safeguards are needed.
Management thanked the public for their support and concern for Dangalabba, saying messages from the community have meant a great deal to staff.
