G316 X Lights Up Gaming

By June Ramli

Perth, Aug 25: The Logitech G316 X 98 wired mechanical gaming keyboard makes a strong first impression with its compact design, colourful illumination and customisable controls.
I recently tested the keyboard after spending years using an older Logitech model with more space between its keys.
The difference was immediately noticeable.
The G316 X 98 feels more compact, and the keys initially felt slightly hard under my fingers.
I made several typing mistakes while becoming accustomed to the tighter layout, but this appears to be a matter of adjustment rather than a problem with the keyboard.
What I loved immediately was the illumination. Its per-key LIGHTSYNC RGB lighting and customisable light bar give the keyboard a colourful, modern appearance that stands out on my desk. Users can personalise 30 light-bar zones, create macros and change key assignments through Logitech’s G HUB software.

The keyboard also features an onboard dot-matrix display and control dial, which can be used to adjust settings including brightness and report rate or control music and volume.
Logitech says the keyboard offers an 8 kHz report rate and a response time of 0.125 milliseconds. These specifications are aimed at gamers who require rapid input, although the difference may be less noticeable during everyday writing and browsing.
Its mechanical keys produce the deeper “thocky” sound associated with custom keyboards. The switches are also hot-swappable, allowing users to replace them without rebuilding the entire keyboard.
Although designed for gaming, the G316 X 98 will also be used for writing stories and completing everyday work. The tighter spacing and firmer keys require some familiarisation after using a wider office keyboard, but I expect typing to become easier with continued use.
Priced at $199 in Australia, it is designed for users who want gaming performance and custom-keyboard features without assembling one themselves.
My verdict is simple: I love this keyboard. Its lighting looks fantastic, it feels well made and it has given my desk an immediate upgrade. I plan to keep using it and expect to enjoy typing on it even more once my fingers become accustomed to the layout.
