Amex Pledges $2 Million in Grants

Perth, July 27: American Express has announced up to $2 million in grants for Australian small businesses through its Shop Small Grants program, delivered in partnership with Mainstreet Australia.
American Express has put forward an initial $1 million to fund 50 grants, and will contribute a further $1 for every eligible transaction made on an American Express Card at participating Shop Small businesses between 1-7 August 2026, up to an additional $1 million.
“This year, together with our Card Members and participating businesses, we’re aiming to provide up to $2 million in Shop Small Grant funding. It’s an opportunity for up to 100 small businesses to access funds that can help them invest in their future and continue making a difference in the communities they serve,” said Corrina Davison, Managing Director, American Express Australia.
“Small businesses help shape the character of our communities. They create local jobs, bring people together and make our neighbourhoods more vibrant, resilient and distinctive. For the past 14 years, Shop Small has celebrated the people behind these businesses and reminded us that where we choose to spend has a real impact. Every time someone shops small, they’re backing the passion, hard work and ambition of a local business owner,” Davison said.

South Melbourne named Australia’s favourite Shop Small destination

Alongside the grants announcement, American Express released its inaugural Amex Shop Small Destination Index, a national ranking based on a survey of more than 4,000 Australian consumers identifying the places most strongly associated with discovering and supporting small businesses. South Melbourne topped the list.
The survey also found that 93% of respondents believe supporting small businesses is important, while 88% agree they play an essential role in making local areas vibrant and distinctive. Hospitality emerged as the primary entry point, with 72% saying cafés, restaurants and bars are where they most frequently engage with small businesses, and Australians said they’re most likely to discover new small businesses by walking past them (58%) or through word of mouth (52%).
“I am proud to be part of the bustling South Melbourne business community. Our suburb is unique in its diversity, energy and genuine local connection. That’s why South Melbourne is such a great place to Shop Small. In Full Bloom has been part of the South Melbourne community for more than 35 years, and while my wife and I took over the business 6 years ago, it’s been incredibly rewarding to build on that legacy and continue serving a community that has embraced the business for generations,” said Rico Acio, owner of In Full Bloom, South Melbourne.
“We’re thrilled that South Melbourne has stamped its place as Australia’s favourite destination to Shop Small. We’ve always known how amazing it is – every street has its own character and behind every door is a passionate and hardworking individual making a positive impact,” Acio said.

Backing from government, industry and ambassadors

“As a previous small business owner, I understand the hard work that goes into turning up every day. Small businesses are the heart of our communities and programs like Amex Shop Small are a great way to encourage Australians to get behind the local businesses that back them every day,” said Dr Anne Aly, Federal Minister for Small Business.
“It’s fantastic to see American Express putting real support behind small businesses through its grant program, helping business owners invest, grow and take their next step. Every time Australians choose to shop small, they’re backing a local job, a local family and someone who has taken a risk to build something of their own,” Aly said.
“When Australians choose to shop small, they’re investing in local jobs, local families and the unique businesses that make our towns and neighbourhoods thrive. That’s why initiatives like the Amex Shop Small Grants program are so valuable, they back the businesses that are at the heart of communities right across Australia,” said Skye Cappuccio, Chief Executive Officer, Council of Small Business Organisations Australia (COSBOA).
“Grants like these give small business owners the opportunity to invest in the future of their business at a time when many are balancing rising costs and tight margins. It’s a practical way to help local businesses continue doing what they do best,” Cappuccio said.
“As someone who’s spent a lot of my life travelling around Australia, I know the best places are often the ones run by locals who pour everything they have into what they do. I’ve seen first-hand what it takes to build a business, from having an idea with your mates, wanting to give something a go and showing up every day to make it work,” said Mick Fanning, American Express Business Ambassador and professional Australian surfer.
“I am proud to be part of American Express’ Shop Small campaign to celebrate the passion and entrepreneurial spirit of small business operators across the country. Small businesses are there for both the small and big moments in life. From your morning coffee at the local cafe, to the birthday cake baked for your child’s first birthday – small businesses contribute to many meaningful moments in our lives,” Fanning said.
“Small businesses are the heart and soul of Australia’s main streets. They create jobs, bring character to our communities and give people a reason to shop, dine and connect in local neighbourhoods. The Amex Shop Small Grants program supports people with the ideas and passion to strengthen those places, whether that means a refreshed shopfront, new equipment or a new experience that brings a precinct to life,” said Joyce Watts, President, Mainstreet Australia.
“Mainstreet Australia is proud to partner with American Express to deliver this initiative nationally and we encourage Australian small businesses and precincts to submit their ideas. When our small businesses thrive, our main streets thrive, creating stronger communities for everyone,” Watts said.
American Express is encouraging Card Members to shop small between 1-7 August to help boost the grant fund. More information is available at amex.com.au/shopsmall.
