Review: Xtra Clubs

By June Ramli

Sydney, Dec 8: Yesterday, I was among a small group invited to preview Xtra Clubs’ new Marrickville venue in Sydney – a wellness space built entirely around sauna, steam and ice baths rather than traditional gym equipment.
My session ran for 90 minutes from 10.30am, though I’ll be honest: my body felt done at around the 60-minute mark.
The club operates as a mixed space, with men and women sharing the same facilities.

For some, that will feel modern and social; for others, it may take a little getting used to.
On media preview day, the room was filled with influencers and content creators, but under normal circumstances photography is strictly prohibited to protect members’ privacy.
Xtra Clubs Marrickville offers a mix of experiences, including traditional steam, infrared sauna and ice baths. One of the ice baths is communal-style, with several people using the same pool of water in rotation.
Despite the shared environment, there is a clear no-nudity policy, and members are expected to arrive and move around in appropriate swimwear or activewear.

The space is largely self-service, powered by the Xtra Clubs app.
You use it to check in, access the club, open lockers and generally move through the facility.
Staff are not always on the floor, but if you misplace your locker number or get stuck, an iPad station can help you retrieve your details and get back into your belongings.
The change rooms are fitted out with practical touches, including large mirrors and a straightener-style hair dryer, making it easier to freshen up if you’re heading to work or another commitment afterwards.
Overall, Xtra Clubs Marrickville is best suited to people who are comfortable sharing space with the opposite sex and are looking for a dedicated recovery and relaxation venue rather than a traditional gym.
Despite my early fatigue, I left the session feeling noticeably more relaxed – a good sign that, for many, this could become part of a regular self-care routine rather than just a one-off experience.
