Petersham’s New Standout

By June Ramli

Sydney, Nov 21: I visited The Bungalow Petersham and experienced it firsthand, and this is my verdict – The Bungalow Petersham Restaurant is a strong addition to the suburb’s dining scene, full of flavour, personality and heart.
With its mixed, globally influenced menu anchored by standout Sri Lankan dishes and warm, relaxed service, it’s well worth a visit, especially if you enjoy bold spices and hearty comfort food.
Tucked away on a quiet street in Petersham, The Bungalow Petersham has quickly found its footing since opening in early 2025.

What began as a small idea has grown into a fully fledged neighbourhood restaurant led by a passionate team who clearly care about good food and genuine hospitality.
The menu is a mix of influences, but two of its best-selling dishes proudly showcase its Sri Lankan roots.
The Sri Lankan Prawns are packed with bold, punchy flavours – rich with spice, aromatics and just the right amount of heat.
The Clay Pot Briyani, served with jackfruit, is smoky, fragrant and deeply satisfying, the kind of dish that feels both comforting and special. It’s no surprise these plates have quickly become customer favourites.
There’s also a quieter standout on the menu: a vegetarian tofu dish that chef Amit describes as a hidden gem. Recently added, it doesn’t yet get the same attention as the signature prawn and briyani dishes, but it should. Thoughtfully seasoned and texturally balanced, it’s a great option not just for vegetarians but for anyone keen to explore the menu beyond the obvious hits.

Beyond these, the kitchen leans into fresh, summery flavours. In the daytime, the Chilli Crab Omelette makes for a standout brunch option, with fluffy eggs wrapped around sweet crab, herbs and a gentle chilli warmth.
As the venue shifts into its evening mood from 5:30pm, Happy Hour (Wednesday to Friday, 5:30–7:00pm) sets the tone for grazing and cocktails.
The Tropical Papaya Salad brings together raw papaya, green mango, lime and sweet chilli, topped with roasted peanuts for crunch – bright, zesty and perfect for warm nights.
Warm Garlic Butter Lobster Rolls, tucked into toasted brioche and served with salt and vinegar chips, deliver a rich, indulgent hit, while the Baja Fish Tacos, with golden beer-battered barramundi, tangy tartar and fresh slaw, round out the menu with easy, shareable comfort.

During my Thursday night visit, the restaurant was already buzzing by 7:30pm.
Even when the shutters were half-closed, you could see the flames dancing in the kitchen – a small glimpse into a busy, hardworking team still finding their rhythm but clearly brimming with potential.

The Bungalow Petersham offers vibrant, flavorful, Sri Lankan-inspired dining experience.

Front-of-house is friendly and welcoming, with a casual yet thoughtful atmosphere that makes it feel like the kind of place you could happily return to, whether for a relaxed brunch, after-work drinks or an unhurried dinner.
The Bungalow Petersham may offer a mixed menu, but its soul lies in big flavours, generous plates and a sense of warmth that feels genuinely local.
With Sri Lankan Prawns and Clay Pot Briyani already firm favourites, a vegetarian tofu sleeper-hit waiting to be discovered, and a bright summer lineup to match, it’s a spot that’s well on its way to becoming a Petersham staple.
