Sydney, July 17: After receiving a complimentary Epson EcoTank 4950 printer a few weeks ago, I finally got around to setting it up — and I’m impressed.
As someone who’s tested dozens of devices over the years, I can confidently say this one stands out.
The first thing to note: this printer requires a smartphone to operate.
You’ll need to download the Epson Smart Panel app from the Apple App Store or Google Play to get started. Without it, the printer won’t work — which could be a deal-breaker for those without a smart device, but for everyone else, it actually streamlines the setup process.
Once connected, the rest was smooth sailing.
The app walks you through everything, from filling the ink tanks (which is oddly satisfying) to running your first test print.
The unit has a modern, futuristic look — clean lines, compact design, and a smart control panel that slides out just before printing.
It’s clearly designed for people who want style and function in one package.

It prints beautifully — text is sharp, colours are vibrant, and it’s fast.
No warm-up time, no fussing with toner.
Plus, the included ink is no small bonus: you get enough to print thousands of pages right out of the box, which adds massive value.
What really caught me off guard was the fax feature.
Yes, fax.
It’s built in, and while I haven’t figured out exactly how to use it yet (who faxes anymore?), it’s kind of fun to see it included.
I’ll dive into that in a future post once I experiment with it a bit more.
This is a printer made for 2025 and beyond — smart, energy-efficient, and designed for busy people who need reliability without constant maintenance.
If you’re running a home office, studying, or just tired of replacing cartridges every month, this one’s a winner.
Would I recommend it?
Absolutely. Just make sure you’ve got a smartphone, and you’re good to go.
