Sydney, May 6: Asthma Australia is urging Australians to become more aware of the responsible use of oral steroids in asthma care as part of this year’s World Asthma Day campaign.
While oral steroids play a vital role as a rescue treatment for asthma, Asthma Australia warns they should not replace proper asthma prevention and daily management.
Overreliance on these medications can result in significant side effects, including insomnia, weight gain, and even osteoporosis.

Kate Miranda, CEO of Asthma Australia, highlighted the risks by pointing out that the lifetime toxic threshold for oral steroids is 1000mg—equivalent to just four standard courses.
She stressed the importance of better asthma management to avoid flare-ups and reduce the need for oral steroid use.
According to recent data, one in nine Australians lives with asthma. In 2022–23, more than 31,000 people were hospitalised due to the condition, and 474 lives were lost to asthma in 2023.
