Sydney, Jan 21: I recently gained free access to BritBox for a year, and it’s been an interesting dive into classic and contemporary British television.
Here are my thoughts on standout crime series and highlights coming to BritBox this February.
Sister Boniface Mysteries offers a delightful mix of Scooby-Doo charm and Murder, She Wrote sophistication, set against the backdrop of the 1960s.
Sister Boniface, the titular character, doubles as a nun and forensic expert, solving mysteries with sharp wit and scientific expertise.
Unlike American crime dramas like NCIS or Criminal Minds, this series leans toward lighthearted crime-solving, with no excessive violence or graphic content.
The British accents and vintage aesthetic add an extra layer of charm, making this a cozy watch for fans of period mysteries.
It’s perfect for those looking for a more relaxed, wholesome crime series.
Fun Fact: I interviewed the lead actress of this series on December 4, 2024.

Death in Paradise is another standout.
If you love scenic backdrops paired with compelling yet simple crime stories, this series might be for you.
Filmed in stunning tropical locations, the show captures the beauty of its settings while delivering engaging mysteries.
Reminiscent of Meurtres à Tahiti, it focuses on solving crimes without resorting to excessive foul language or dark themes.
The British detective, ever professional in his suit, brings a refreshing approach to the genre, far removed from the high-stakes drama of American crime series that often delve into terrorism or gruesome murders.
While visually appealing, I found the pacing a bit too slow and lacked the intrigue to fully invest me in the characters or their stories.
However, it’s undoubtedly a well-curated choice for British expats or anyone seeking a gentler take on crime-solving.
Related recommendation: If you enjoy this style, you might like The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency—another series with a similar tone and pacing.
February is shaping up to be an exciting month on BritBox, packed with crime dramas, comedies, thrillers, and the glitz and glamour of awards season.
The return of Death in Paradise introduces a new detective, Mervin Wilson, who arrives in Saint Marie from London.
As the team uncovers clues about a case, they begin to suspect that Mervin may have an ulterior motive for being on the island.
The series continues to offer a delightful mix of sun-soaked escapism, captivating mysteries, and unpredictable twists.
Don Gilet stars as Detective Mervin Wilson, alongside Shantol Jackson, Ginny Holder, and Élizabeth Bourgine. Episodes will stream weekly from February 2025.
Adding to the lineup is For Her Sins, a suspenseful mystery thriller that promises to keep audiences on the edge of their seats.
Jo Joyner stars as Laura, a seemingly perfect wife and mother whose life begins to unravel when a charismatic stranger, Emily, played by Rachel Shenton, starts to exploit cracks in her family’s façade.
As tensions rise, old secrets resurface, and Laura is drawn into an increasingly dangerous game.
Ann Mitchell joins the cast in this gripping drama, which begins streaming on BritBox from February 19, 2025.
The much-loved sitcom Ghosts returns for its fifth and final season.
Alison and Mike are faced with new challenges as they try to rebuild Button House following a fire in the gatehouse, while the ghosts themselves delve into mysteries and find ways to entertain each other.
Featuring Charlotte Ritchie, Kiell Smith-Bynoe, Jim Howick, Lolly Adefope, and Mathew Baynton, the new season begins streaming on BritBox from February 3.
BritBox also brings the 2025 EE British Academy Film Awards to viewers, hosted by David Tennant from the Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall.
Known as the UK’s biggest night in film, the awards celebrate the best in cinema, with an impressive lineup of stars and performances.
The ceremony, often seen as a precursor to the Oscars, will stream on BritBox from February 17, 2025, featuring A-list interviews and awards presented to a star-studded audience.
BritBox feels like the UK’s answer to France’s TV5Monde—a nostalgic haven for British expats looking to reconnect with their home culture through TV.
As of today, more than a million Britons call Australia home, making platforms like BritBox an invaluable resource for staying connected.
With such a diverse offering of mystery, drama, comedy, and entertainment, February on BritBox promises something for everyone.
Whether you’re in the mood for thrilling mysteries, lighthearted laughs, or the glamour of awards season, BritBox has it all.
