Montu’s Tech-Driven Expansion

By June Ramli

Sydney, Aug 14: Montu, a leading health tech startup in Australia, has rapidly grown into a major player in the medical cannabis industry, leveraging cutting-edge technology to deliver personalised care at scale.
Operating fully remotely, Montu’s team has become a cohesive unit despite many of its members meeting in person for the first time recently.
Myles Lawlor, General Manager of Technology & Product at Montu & Alternaleaf, highlighted the company’s journey from its humble beginnings in 2019 to its current status as the largest provider of medical cannabis services in Australia and beyond.
“We’ve built something incredibly complex yet seamless for our patients,” Lawlor explained.
“Our technology allows us to provide fast, efficient care that meets the growing demand for on-demand healthcare services, especially in a post-pandemic world where patients expect instant access to medical professionals and treatments.”

Montu’s platform, which connects patients with nurses and doctors through a streamlined telehealth system, has been pivotal in addressing the challenges of the healthcare industry.
With over 175,000 patients in Australia and the UK, Montu ensures that treatments are delivered quickly and effectively, often within 24 hours.
“From the start, our goal was to simplify the entire patient journey,” Lawlor said.
“We’ve invested heavily in building our own prescription management systems, which allow us to ensure that medications are not only available but delivered to patients swiftly.
This is no small feat, given the highly regulated nature of our industry.”
Montu’s impact extends beyond patient care.
The company’s wholesale arm, Leafio, is one of the largest importers of medical cannabis in Australia, supplying not only its own clinics but also pharmacies across the country.
This dual approach has positioned Montu as a leader in the wholesale markets.
However, the journey hasn’t been without its challenges.
“We’ve had to overcome significant hurdles, particularly in legitimising our business in the eyes of global payment providers,” Lawlor noted.
“It took us nearly a year and a half to negotiate with companies like Shopify and Stripe to support our transactions. But now, we’re proud to be the first cannabis company globally to work with these tier-one providers.”
As Montu continues to expand, Lawlor emphasized the company’s commitment to patient-first care and innovation.
“We’re always looking for new opportunities, both in Australia and internationally. We’ve recently launched in the UK and are exploring other markets. The demand for quality healthcare is universal, and we’re ready to meet that demand wherever it takes us.”
Montu’s success story is a testament to the power of technology in transforming healthcare. With a dedicated team and a relentless focus on improving patient outcomes, Montu is poised to lead the way in the global health tech landscape.
