Sydney, May 12: Happy Mother’s Day! Today’s movie review is specially curated for moms and their little ones.
I chose “IF,” a film that initially drew me in with its charming trailer and, of course, the ever-delightful Ryan Reynolds.
This film straddles the line between a children’s storybook tale and an adult’s nostalgic journey, making it a wonderful escape from the risqué fare that populates so much of our screens these days.
“IF” unfolds in a world where imaginary friends are a part of childhood—a concept that varies culturally. In Western cultures, these are benign, whimsical creatures, whereas in Asian cultures, they might be seen as either demons or guardian angels.
The narrative delves into the poignant truth that as we transition from children to adults, these cherished companions begin to fade away.
The story reminded me of a friend from my university days in Malaysia who vividly remembered her last encounter with her imaginary friend—a bittersweet farewell that stayed with her.

As I watched the film, these memories surged back, intertwining with the unfolding story.
Although I never had an imaginary friend, I often found solace in talking to myself as a child.
This movie beautifully captures that innocent time.
“IF” starts off slow but picks up momentum, weaving a narrative that’s as simple as it is heartwarming.
It teaches us to hold onto the whimsical side of our youth, to cherish those invisible friends who made our childhoods a bit brighter.
For fans of animation, “IF” will be a delight.
The characters are endearing, and I must admit, the film brought a tear to my eye more than once. Though I suspect it won’t have the same effect the second time around, its message remains powerful: never lose touch with your youthful spirit, for sometimes, those imagined friends are the ones that stick around the longest.
Directed by John Krasinski, who also stars alongside Ryan Reynolds and an ensemble including Cailey Fleming, Fiona Shaw, with voices from Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Louis Gossett Jr., and Steve Carell, “IF” celebrates the incredible power of a child’s imagination.
The film is rated PG and runs for 104 minutes, making it a perfect family watch that underscores the joy and wonder of childhood.
