Kuala Lumpur, April 19: A recent survey by Shopee titled ‘Engaging Generation Z Shoppers in the Digital Era’ has shed light on the shopping behaviors and preferences of Gen Z consumers, revealing key insights that could help digital platforms better cater to this demographic.
The survey found that 60 per cent of Gen Z shoppers prioritize platforms that offer ease of search, product comparisons, and access to customer reviews, underlining the importance of a user-friendly and informative shopping environment.
According to the survey, comprehensive product information and platform trustworthiness also play crucial roles in attracting Gen Z customers.
The findings emphasize the need for a rich variety of products, backed by professional recommendations and robust user reviews, to engage these young shoppers effectively.
Shopee Live, a feature on the ecommerce platform, enhances user interaction by enabling live chats with brands and sellers, offering real-time product demonstrations that build confidence in potential purchases.
“Our user-friendly platform features like Shopee Live empower users with information beyond product listings, such as in-depth reviews or live demonstrations,” said Ming Kit Tan, Head of Marketing and Business Intelligence at Shopee Malaysia.
“It fosters a relationship between seller and buyer, allowing a sense of trust to be built with each interaction. Such hyper-personalised experiences function as a value-added service, building long-term brand loyalty within this rising demographic.”
The survey also highlights that 30 per cent of Gen Z shoppers typically hold items in their cart for more than a day to perform thorough research before finalizing a purchase.
This behavior underscores the importance of a platform that supports in-depth product research, featuring a broad range of items and insightful user reviews.
When it comes to the checkout process, 60 per cent of these shoppers stated that user experience features such as product restock reminders, flash deals, and easy application of vouchers could prompt them to complete their purchase immediately.
Meanwhile, the remaining 40 per cent cited efficient delivery services as a deciding factor for checking out their carts.
Value maximization is paramount for Gen Z shoppers, with 83 per cent influenced by free shipping, competitive pricing, and attractive promotions.
Despite this focus on value, product quality remains a secondary consideration for most.
The reliance on customer reviews and interactive services is significant among Gen Z buyers, with over 75 per cent consulting both user and expert reviews prior to purchases.
“Customer service remains a key differentiator,” noted Tan.
In 2023, Shopee achieved a 98 per cent success rate in resolving customer issues within 30 seconds, leading to an impressive 80 per cent customer satisfaction rate.
Shopee continues to evolve its platform to enhance user satisfaction, employing deep learning to refine its search functions and personalise product recommendations.
The aim is to create a tailored shopping experience that aligns with individual user preferences, leveraging features like Shopee Live to facilitate direct engagement and bolster buyer confidence through interactive and informative sessions.
