Sydney, April 10: One of India’s leading film production giants, Zee Studios, along with eminent producers Boney Kapoor, Arunava Joy Sengupta, and Akash Chawla, is gearing up for the global release of their much-anticipated film “Maidaan.”
The sports biopic, slated for a grand release on EID, April 10, 2024, across Australia, chronicles the golden era of Indian football through the lens of legendary coach Syed Abdul Rahim’s life.
Starring Ajay Devgn as the iconic football coach, who is credited with putting Indian football on the international map, and featuring celebrated actress Priyamani, along with acclaimed actor Gajraj Rao, “Maidaan” promises to be a cinematic marvel.
The film pays homage to Rahim’s journey and his historic achievements with the Indian football team from 1952 to 1962, highlighting their triumphant semi-final run at the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne, a first for any Asian team.
Directed by Amit Ravindernath Sharma, known for his work on “Badhaai Ho,” the film explores the compelling story of Rahim, who before coaching, made history by playing for the Dutch club HSV Hoek, marking him as one of the first Indian players in European football.
The narrative delves into the life of Rahim and his team, dubbed ‘the Brazil of Asia,’ showcasing the trials and triumphs of legendary players like P.K. Banerjee, Chuni Goswami, and Tulsidas Balram, among others.
Ajay Devgn expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating, “Maidaan is my personal favorite… It is one of the best films I’ve done.
It has shaped up very well… It is a big cinema experience with the matches and the drama and all that. We would want people to see it in the theatres.”
The film’s global anticipation underscores the growing impact of Indian cinema, especially in Australia, where the Indian diaspora represents a significant audience, mirroring the country’s status as the world’s largest film producer.
With music by the legendary AR Rahman and lyrics by Manoj Muntashir Shukla, “Maidaan” is all set to captivate audiences worldwide, offering a unique blend of sports, history, and high-stakes drama on the big screen this EID.
