Sydney, March 18: A 25-year-old IT contractor from Macquarie Park, Sydney, has been handed a two-and-a-half-year prison sentence for defrauding over $66,000 from multiple victims.
Exploiting his position with a company serving the Australian National Maritime Museum (ANMM), he manipulated the institution’s accounts payable system, redirecting funds to his personal accounts.
The fraudulent activities funded extravagant purchases, including 4WD enhancements and sophisticated IT equipment.
Detected by the ANMM in November 2022, the case was promptly taken up by the AFP, leading to the fraudster’s arrest in March 2023.
The Central Local Court convicted him on multiple counts, including unauthorized computer access and obtaining property by deception.
The AFP’s commitment to combating cybercrime underscores the gravity of such offenses and the vigilance against misuse of privileged IT roles.
