London, March 19: In a significant move to reduce emissions, British Airways has announced a comprehensive update to its airport equipment at Heathrow with a multi-million-pound investment.
This initiative aims to transition more than 90 per cent of its ground vehicles and equipment to zero emissions, hybrids, or those operating on Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) by 2024 and 2025.
The overhaul includes updating over 750 pieces of equipment, such as aircraft de-icing vehicles and baggage loaders, to HVO fuel, replacing diesel passenger aircraft steps with electric versions, and introducing hybrid electric vehicles for cargo movement.
Additionally, the airline plans to convert its entire fleet of passenger buses to electric and hybrid models, supported by a new large charging park at Heathrow.
This eco-friendly shift is part of British Airways’ broader £7 billion strategy to transform its operations and significantly reduce its environmental footprint, aligning with its goal to reach net zero emissions by 2050 or sooner.
