Obesity Boosts Youth Pancreatic Cancer
Sydney, Feb 26: A groundbreaking study led by Flinders University has uncovered a significant increase in young-onset pancreatic cancer (YOPC) among 15-49-year-olds in Australia and other high socio-demographic index (SDI) regions over the past two decades.
Published in Pancreatology, the research highlights a concerning rise in incidence, death, and disability-adjusted life years due to YOPC, particularly in areas with higher levels of income, education, and lower fertility rates.
Despite a global decline in smoking and tobacco use contributing to a reduction in YOPC-related disability, the escalating impact of obesity and high fasting plasma glucose levels is becoming increasingly significant.
With the incidence rate in the Northern Territory alarmingly higher than in South Australia, the study emphasizes the urgent need for public health initiatives to address these risk factors.
The research, revealing a stark contrast in YOPC rates globally, points to obesity and diet as key areas for intervention to combat this deadly disease affecting younger populations.
