Geneva, Jan 10: The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has unveiled data showing a significant rebound in air travel demand.
As of November 2023, there has been a surge in air travel, which is now closely approaching the pre-pandemic levels of 2019.
This resurgence is attributed to the easing of COVID-19 restrictions and an increasing desire for travel among both individuals and businesses.
Revenue passenger kilometers (RPKs) for November 2023 increased by 29.7 per cent compared to the same month in the previous year.
This notable recovery brings global traffic to 99.1 per cent of the levels seen in November 2019.
The growth in international travel, though slightly behind domestic travel, was substantial, with a 26.4 per cent increase over November 2022.
Leading this growth was the Asia-Pacific region, which saw a year-over-year increase of 63.8 per cent. International RPKs for November 2023 attained 94.5 per cent of the figures recorded in November 2019, despite various global economic challenges.
Domestic air travel demonstrated even more robust growth, with a 34.8 per cent rise compared to November 2022.
Notably, the domestic traffic for November 2023 surpassed the November 2019 level by 6.7 per cent. China showed an extraordinary increase of 272 per cent from the previous year, largely due to the lifting of COVID-related travel restrictions.
The United States also experienced a significant increase in domestic travel, driven by robust demand over the Thanksgiving holiday period.
Willie Walsh, IATA’s Director General, highlighted the significance of these developments, stating, “We are moving ever closer to surpassing the 2019 peak year for air travel.
Economic headwinds are not deterring people from taking to the skies. International travel remains 5.5 per cent below pre-pandemic levels, but that gap is rapidly closing.
And domestic markets have been above their pre-pandemic levels continuously since April.”
An in-depth analysis of the air passenger market in November 2023 reveals regional variances and trends. In the international passenger market, all regions reported growth, with Latin America achieving the highest load factor at 84.9 per cent.
In contrast, African airlines, despite a 22.1 per cent increase in RPKs, recorded the lowest load factor at 69.7 per cent.
The domestic market also showed significant growth across major countries. The United States, China, and Australia were particularly notable for their contributions to the increase in domestic air travel.
The report concluded with a focus on the aviation industry’s commitment to sustainable practices. The industry’s swift recovery from COVID-19 underscores the critical role of air travel.
This recovery is occurring alongside a global transition to Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) for decarbonization.
The CAAF/3 conference and COP28 resulted in agreements to transition to SAF, aiming for five per cent carbon savings by 2030.
However, the challenge remains in increasing the production of SAF, with a call for government action to incentivize its expansion.
This resurgence in air travel, combined with an emphasis on sustainability, signals a new chapter for the aviation industry, marked by potential growth and a commitment to environmental responsibility.
