Los Angeles, Dec 20: In a record-breaking auction at Julien’s in Los Angeles, a stunning ballerina-length evening dress once worn by Princess Diana fetched an astounding US$1,148,080, far surpassing its initial estimate of US$100,000.
This sale at the “HOLLYWOOD LEGENDS” event, hosted by Julien’s Auctions and Turner Classic Movies (TCM), has set a new world record for the most expensive dress of Princess Diana ever sold at auction. The previous record was US$604,800.
The dress, a creation of Moroccan-British fashion designer Jacques Azagury, is renowned for its black velvet bodice adorned with metallic thread-embroidered stars and a two-tier royal blue organza skirt.
Worn by the Princess in Florence, Italy, on April 23, 1985, this piece embodies her royal elegance and love for dance, particularly reflecting her patronage of The English National Ballet.
Another highlight from the auction was the sale of a blush pink chiffon Emanuels blouse, worn by Princess Diana in her iconic 1981 engagement portrait, which went for US$381,000, nearly four times its original estimate of US$80,000.
This portrait, taken by Lord Snowden, is one of the most memorable images of Diana and was featured in the February 1981 issue of Vogue.
The blouse had been on display at Kensington Palace in London as part of the “Diana: Her Fashion Story” exhibition from February 2017 to February 2019.
Overall, the “HOLLYWOOD LEGENDS” auction was Julien’s most successful Hollywood memorabilia event in its 20-year history, garnering over US$7 million with a record-breaking 16,351 registered bids from global bidders, including participants from the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Japan, Australia, and many other countries.
The event solidified Julien’s Auctions’ reputation in the world of Hollywood memorabilia.
