Sydney, Dec 1: In a remarkable milestone marking its first anniversary, the Australian Federal Police (AFP) is celebrating the success of the Dandelion Program, a groundbreaking initiative aimed at recruiting skilled neurodivergent individuals, with a particular focus on those with Autism.
Launched in July last year, the program has proven to be a game-changer for the AFP, enhancing its workforce while fostering inclusivity in the workplace.
The Dandelion Program’s primary objective is to connect neurodivergent individuals, recognized for their unique talents, with meaningful employment opportunities.
By doing so, the AFP seeks to address skill shortages and create workplaces that champion diversity and inclusion. The program has especially targeted Autistic individuals, harnessing their strengths in areas such as software development and data analytics.
Since its inception, the program has successfully welcomed six new starters and a dedicated neurodiversity consultant to its Covert and Technical Operations (CTO) branch.
This specialized branch plays a crucial role in providing covert and technical support to AFP investigations, including data and digital surveillance collection.
Participating individuals showcased their strong technical aptitude during the recruitment assessment, earning them a coveted spot in a two-year traineeship with the AFP Digital Surveillance Collection Team. This opportunity allows recruits to further refine their innate abilities, contributing to the AFP’s world-leading digital surveillance and data analytics programs.
Managed by DXC IT, the traineeship program oversees the selection, recruitment, and support of neurodivergent individuals for AFP roles.
Throughout the program, participants gain vocational experience at the AFP, while DXC provides essential support in developing both life and work skills. Post-traineeship, the AFP has the option to employ these individuals full-time.
Commander Rob Nelson expressed his satisfaction with the Dandelion Program, noting its transformative impact on the AFP’s workforce.
“The rollout of the Dandelion Program has been a game-changer for the AFP.
It has enabled us to recruit a range of enthusiastic individuals who are passionate about the AFP and law enforcement, and keeping Australians safe,” he remarked.
Nelson highlighted the program’s success in providing specialized recruitment and support services to neurodivergent community members, facilitating fulfilling careers within the AFP.
The participants in the Dandelion Program receive comprehensive support, including a Neurodiversity Consultant, ensuring they are guided and assisted in adapting to the work environment at every step.
As the program continues to thrive, the AFP plans to expand the Dandelion Program to more commands across the organization in the coming year.
This commitment underscores the AFP’s dedication to creating a more diverse, inclusive, and talented workforce.
