Sydney, Sept 22: In RACV’s Annual Car Running Costs Survey, the MG ZS Excite Standard Range RWD Wagon has been crowned as the most cost-effective electric vehicle (EV) to own and operate for the second consecutive year.
This survey, which focuses on EV affordability, calculates the comprehensive cost of ownership over a five-year period. It includes factors such as the purchase price, loan repayments, insurance, charging expenses, tire maintenance, servicing, repairs, and auto club membership.
Joining the MG ZS Excite in the top three most affordable electric vehicles were the GWM Ora Standard Range Hatch and the BYD Atto 3 Standard Range Wagon.
RACV’s Electric Vehicle Manager, Liam Brady, highlighted the increasing affordability of electric vehicles, making them an increasingly attractive option for prospective car buyers.
“For those considering an electric vehicle as their next car, there’s reason to be excited as more models enter the market, and competition for your dollar increases,” said Brady.
Victoria’s cheapest electric vehicles – costs averaged out over five years with 15,000km driven per year.
Electric vehicle | Charging costs per month | Total monthly ownership cost |
MG ZS Excite Standard Range RWD Wagon | $101.38 | $1,172.76 |
GWM Ora Standard Range Hatch | $89.75 | $1,177.32 |
BYD Atto 3 Standard Range Wagon | $95.00 | $1,378.51 |
Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross ES PHEV 2.4 Wagon | $135.36 | $1,433.86 |
Nissan Leaf Standard Hatch | $99.13 | $1,476.14 |
Cupra Born 5 Seat Hatch | $103.25 | $1,656.89 |
Tesla Model 3 RWD Standard Range Sedan | $85.25 | $1,663.87 |
Polestar 2 Single Motor Standard Range Hatch | $108.88 | $1,717.03 |
Kia Niro S Pure Electric Wagon | $95.75 | $1,804.34 |
Tesla Model Y RWD Wagon | $89.75 | $1,897.25 |
He added, “The appeal of the MG ZS Excite electric vehicle lies in its running costs. Over an average of 15,000km driven annually, an MG ZS Excite owner will only spend $1,216.56 on charging costs, compared to the $1,992.96 spent by non-electric MG3 Core owners on fuel.”
Brady also emphasized that RACV offers a range of EV products and services, making it an ideal partner for motorists transitioning to electric vehicles. Whether it’s home charging solutions, powering commercial fleets, or installing chargers at retail locations, RACV’s team of experts can provide assistance.
Furthermore, RACV is actively supporting the expansion of EV charging networks, with investments in leading Australian EV companies such as Chargefox and JET Charge.
In related news, RACV recently acquired ownership of several Chargefox fast charging stations located in Victoria.
