Ireland Brings Ancient Story Behind Halloween to Sydney

Perth, Oct 15: Sydneysiders can trace Halloween back to its Irish roots this month, with a free art trail opening across Circular Quay and The Rocks on Monday, October 19.
Ireland’s Halloween Art Dark Trail, presented by Tourism Ireland and Ghost Festival, features five art boxes. Each tells a chapter of how the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain became the Halloween celebrated around the world today.
Samhain marked the end of harvest and the start of winter in ancient Ireland. It was a time of fire, ritual and storytelling, when the boundary between the living world and the otherworld was believed to be at its thinnest. Irish communities carried those customs abroad, and over centuries they evolved into modern Halloween.
The trail runs until Sunday, November 1, and is part of Tourism Ireland’s Home of Halloween campaign.
During Ghost Festival, held in The Rocks from October 29 to November 1, an Irish storyteller will bring the Samhainstory to life alongside a fire show and live fiddle music.
“Most people know what Halloween looks like, but far fewer know the story of how it came to be,” said Ghost Festival event director Vincent Hernandez.
Entry to the trail is free. The main festival is also free, with some ticketed experiences. Details are at ghostfestival.com.au.
