Perth, July 7: When the Looki L1 was unveiled at CES 2026, it promised something many AI wearables had yet to achieve: the ability to anticipate what users need instead of simply responding to voice commands or button presses. Rather than being another AI gadget chasing the latest trend, the company positioned the L1 as a wearable that could understand its surroundings, learn from context and help users capture life more intelligently.
Having received the device in June, I’ve had the opportunity to use it beyond the excitement of its CES debut. After spending time with the Looki L1 in everyday situations, it’s clear that the company is attempting something more ambitious than creating another action camera or AI assistant.
More Than Just a Wearable Camera
At first glance, the Looki L1 resembles a compact wearable camera, but that’s only part of the story. It combines cameras, microphones and AI processing to observe what’s happening around you and offer relevant information based on the situation.
Instead of waiting for you to ask questions, the device continuously analyses its surroundings. Whether you’re attending an exhibition, travelling, exercising or simply going about your daily routine, the L1 attempts to recognise the context and provide useful prompts or automatically document important moments.
The concept feels less like wearing a camera and more like carrying a digital companion.
Designed for Everyday Use
One of the biggest strengths of the Looki L1 is its lightweight design. It’s comfortable enough to wear throughout the day without becoming distracting, something that cannot always be said for wearable technology.
Battery life is also respectable, with up to 12 hours in Story Mode. During my testing, it comfortably lasted through most daily activities without needing frequent charging. The built-in 32GB of storage provides enough room for photos, videos and audio recordings, making it practical for travel or long days away from home.
AI That Tries to Think Ahead
What makes the Looki L1 different is its proactive approach.
Rather than waiting for a wake word or button press, it attempts to understand what’s happening around you. During busy environments, it automatically identifies moments worth remembering. While exercising, it adapts to physical activity and provides summaries afterwards. During quieter moments, it can help organise memories and generate AI-powered recaps of your day.
This proactive intelligence is still an emerging concept, and there are occasions when the device doesn’t perfectly predict what you want. However, when it works well, it genuinely feels different from traditional voice assistants. Instead of asking AI for help, the AI occasionally offers assistance before you realise you need it.
Three Intelligent Modes
One of the Looki L1’s standout features is its scene-adaptive intelligence, which automatically switches between three operating modes depending on the user’s environment. Expo Mode is particularly useful during conferences, exhibitions and networking events, where it recognises people, captures important moments and helps organise information gathered throughout the day. Fitness Mode detects movement and physical activity, generating post-workout summaries and insights that complement, rather than replace, dedicated fitness trackers. Meanwhile, Everyday Life Mode quietly learns from daily routines, observing habits, productivity and lifestyle patterns to provide personalised suggestions over time. Instead of simply recording video, the Looki L1 uses AI to help users better understand, organise and reflect on their everyday experiences.
Privacy Matters
Given that the device continuously observes its surroundings, privacy is understandably one of the first questions people ask.
Looki says sensitive processing takes place on the device wherever possible, while users retain control over what is stored, shared or deleted. That level of transparency is reassuring, although anyone considering a wearable camera should remain mindful of local privacy laws and be respectful when recording around others.
Who Is It For?
The Looki L1 isn’t designed for everyone.
Content creators, journalists, travellers and professionals who regularly attend meetings or events are likely to benefit the most. Those who enjoy documenting their lives without constantly reaching for a smartphone may also appreciate the hands-free experience. For users expecting a simple action camera, however, the learning curve may take some adjustment because the L1’s greatest strengths come from its AI features rather than the camera itself.
Final Verdict
The Looki L1 represents an intriguing step towards the next generation of wearable AI. While the technology is still evolving, the idea of scene-aware intelligence that proactively helps users capture memories and organise their day feels refreshingly different from today’s reactive AI assistants. After using it beyond its CES launch, I came away impressed by its ambition. There is still room for the software to mature, but the foundation is promising, and at its US$199 price point it offers an accessible introduction to what proactive AI wearables could become.
