Australia’s Population Hits 27.8 Million

Perth, June 30: Australia’s population grew by 1.5 per cent in the year to December 2025, reaching 27.8 million people, according to new figures released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).
The latest data shows Australia’s population increased by 412,500 people over the 12-month period.
ABS head of demography Beidar Cho said the increase was driven by both natural population growth and overseas migration.
“Our population grew to 27.8 million, with 412,500 more people than in December 2024,” Cho said.
“This was made up by natural increase, which is the number of births minus those who died, and overseas migration.”
Natural increase contributed 111,500 people to Australia’s population growth during the year.
The ABS reported births rose by 3.6 per cent over the period, while deaths increased by 0.1 per cent.
Net overseas migration remained the largest contributor to population growth, adding 301,000 people during the year.
Victoria recorded the largest numerical increase in population, adding 117,300 residents to reach 7.12 million people.
New South Wales remained Australia’s most populous state, with 8.64 million residents at the end of December 2025.
Queensland’s population climbed by 92,200 people to 5.71 million.
Western Australia continued to record the fastest growth rate in the country.
“Western Australia continues to have the fastest growing population, with an annual rise of 2.2 per cent,” Cho said.
Western Australia’s population reached 3.08 million people after increasing by 65,500 residents over the year.
Tasmania recorded the slowest rate of population growth, with its population rising by just 0.5 per cent to 579,100 people.
South Australia grew by 1.0 per cent to 1.91 million people, while the Australian Capital Territory increased by 1.3 per cent and the Northern Territory by 1.6 per cent.
The ABS said the release also includes analysis explaining the differences between net overseas migration figures and overseas arrivals and departures data, as well as information on the population of people present in Australia.
The figures highlight Australia’s continued population growth, with migration remaining the dominant driver of expansion as the nation edges closer to the 28 million mark.
