Perth, June 17: Families looking for a fun and educational school holiday activity can head to SEA LIFE Melbourne Aquarium this winter for Croc Academy, a new crocodile-themed experience running from 24 June to 19 July.
The event introduces visitors to Coowonga, SEA LIFE Melbourne‘s newest resident and the only saltwater crocodile on display in Melbourne.
Through interactive activities, themed crafts, keeper talks and hands-on learning experiences, children can discover what makes saltwater crocodiles some of Australia’s most fascinating reptiles.
Visitors can explore the Croc Lair, learn surprising crocodile facts throughout the aquarium and hear Coowonga’s story directly from expert keepers.

Coowonga recently arrived from the Rockhampton region in Queensland and now calls SEA LIFE Melbourne‘s state-of-the-art Croc Lair home.
The 400kg crocodile was relocated following concerns he posed a risk to local communities and has been given a permanent sanctuary in Melbourne.
“While the loss of Pinjarra was deeply felt by our team and the Melbourne community, we are incredibly excited to introduce this awe-inspiring animal to our guests,” said Claire Burrell, General Manager at SEA LIFE Melbourne.
“Our new resident deepens our mission to educate the public on the vital role apex predators play in maintaining the health of Australia’s northern wetland ecosystems.”
The crocodile’s name was selected by the Melbourne community in consultation with the Darumbal people of Queensland. Coowonga is the traditional name of the land where he originated before making the journey south.

Highlights of the Croc Lair experience include:

  • 360-degree viewing across three levels
  • Underwater viewing opportunities
  • Daily keeper presentations
  • Educational talks on crocodile conservation
  • Enhanced enrichment features designed for animal welfare

“Saltwater crocodiles were once pushed to the brink of extinction,” said Katharine Needham, Head Keeper and Aquarist at SEA LIFE Melbourne Aquarium.
“By bringing this incredible animal to the heart of Melbourne, we can bridge the gap between the city and the wild, teaching the next generation to respect and protect these modern-day dinosaurs.”
