NTU Develops Surgical Robot
Perth, May 28: NTU Singapore scientists have developed a seed-sized surgical robot that can move, cut tissue, release drugs, grip and store samples, and generate heat wirelessly.
The 4.4mm robot is controlled by weak magnetic fields and can switch between functions in under a second. The research, led by Associate Professor Lum Guo Zhan from NTU’s School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, was published in Advanced Materials.
“Most magnetic robots like this can perform only one or two functions. Our latest invention can now do five, and our long-term goal is for doctors to use these mini robots in the body, navigate them to a targeted location, and use them to perform treatments,” said Assoc Prof Lum, who is a pioneer in miniature robots made from soft, flexible materials.
The NTU team tested the robot on biological tissue models, including chicken liver and gelatin-based materials that simulate soft tissue. In lab tests, it cut tissue, dispensed particles simulating drugs, gripped and stored tissue samples, and generated localised heat.
“For these robots to move closer to practical use, we need to understand not just how they work in the lab, but how they could be guided, monitored and controlled in realistic medical settings,” Assoc Prof Lum added.
Sony Unveils BRAVIA TVs

Perth, May 29: Sony has unveiled two new BRAVIA True RGB televisions, the BRAVIA 9 II and BRAVIA 7 II, alongside the BRAVIA Theatre Trio home audio system.
The new TVs are powered by Sony’s RGB Backlight Master Drive Pro, which controls independently driven red, green and blue light sources to deliver the largest colour volume in Sony’s home TV history.
Sony said the True RGB technology differs from conventional TVs that rely on a white backlight, instead using dedicated red, green and blue LEDs to improve colour purity and brightness.
The TVs also feature a new mirage stand designed to conceal cables and create a floating, clutter-free appearance. The flagship BRAVIA 9 II includes Immersive Black Screen Pro, a glare-free, low-reflection screen treatment designed to deliver deep blacks in bright living rooms.
The BRAVIA 9 II will be priced from $5,999 to $44,999, with models available from July and the 115-inch model arriving in September. The BRAVIA 7 II will be priced from $2,699 to $12,999, with staggered availability from May to August. The BRAVIA Theatre Trio will retail for $2,999 and be available from July.
