Perth, May 19: Australians are being encouraged to cash in on unused household items after eBay Australia announced it is removing transaction fees for casual sellers, with eligible users now able to sell up to $25,000 annually without paying seller fees.
The move comes amid new research commissioned by eBay Australia, which found Australians could collectively be sitting on as much as $32 billion worth of unused items that could potentially be resold online.
The research also found the average Australian household has around 15 unused items that could be sold, with many estimating they could make almost $1,500 from decluttering their homes.
According to the findings, more than one in three Australians surveyed said seller fees had previously discouraged them from listing items online, while more than half said they would be more likely to sell if fees were removed.
Younger Australians are also increasingly viewing resale platforms as a side hustle opportunity, with Millennials and Gen Z respondents reporting high levels of “retail regret” over unused purchases.

To mark the launch, Australian pop duo The Veronicas have listed a range of personal items on eBay, including a Fender guitar, an Alexander McQueen skull scarf, a custom jacket and a vintage scrying mirror collected during tours overseas.
“Being able to give these pieces a new life and knowing it is now free to sell on eBay is a game-changer. We’re so excited for our fans to get their hands on a piece of our history, and to see more people across Australia start listing their pre-loved treasures online!” said Jess Origliasso.
“We’ve loved unearthing some really special items, a lot of which we have collected on the road over the years, like my old Scrying Mirror, and passing them on to a new home. The fact that it’s now free to sell on eBay means anyone can easily list their pre-loved items and earn a little extra cash, which is incredible,” added Lisa Origliasso.
eBay Australia said categories such as fashion, collectables, lifestyle products and tech continue to drive strong demand in the growing pre-loved market, with brands including Louis Vuitton, Zimmermann and Carhartt among the most searched items on the platform.
