Qantas $105m Settlement

Perth, March 13: Qantas Airways has agreed to pay $105 million to settle a class action brought on behalf of hundreds of thousands of customers whose flights were cancelled during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The proposed settlement, announced by Echo Law, relates to a class action filed in the Federal Court in August 2023. The case alleged that affected customers were entitled to cash refunds when flights were cancelled due to pandemic travel restrictions, but were instead given restricted flight credits. The settlement is subject to court approval and has been reached with no admission of liability by Qantas.
Echo Law partner Andrew Paull described the agreement as a significant outcome for consumers, saying the settlement would put compensation into the hands of hundreds of thousands of Qantas customers. He said the amount was in addition to Qantas’ public commitment, made shortly after the class action was launched, to provide refunds to COVID credit holders.
If approved by the court, eligible group members will be directly notified about the settlement and their rights, including details on how to claim their share of the compensation. The case is being conducted with Piper Alderman as agent solicitors and is supported by litigation funders CASL and Omni Bridgeway.
