Perth, Jan 5: Uniden’s latest walkie talkie range – the UH45 Max Adventure Series and the UH610 Max Series – is designed to cover both family use and more serious outdoor adventures.
I tested both units, but spent more time with the UH610 Max “adult” model, and came away impressed with how each range fits its intended user.
For everyday, family-friendly use, the Uniden UH45 Max Series is a compact option for short outings and simple communication without relying on mobile phones or internet coverage.
I tried the UH45 Max while moving items between the garage and the 4th floor of my apartment building via the stairs.
It handled the environment well: audio was clear, the connection stayed steady through multiple walls and levels, and I could easily hear the person on the other end.
There was no unwanted chatter from other users cutting in, which can happen on busy UHF channels.
The UH45 Max operates at 0.5 watts and is rated for a range of around three kilometres in ideal conditions.
In real-world indoor settings like apartment blocks, it still performed reliably, making it a practical option for multi-storey buildings or larger homes.

Key features of the UH45 Max include:
- Kid Zone Plus and Voice Scramble modes to reduce interference and provide safer conversations, especially for children
- USB-C charging compatibility, with the flexibility to use rechargeable batteries or standard alkaline batteries
- A compact, lightweight design with an inbuilt LED light, useful in car parks, stairwells or at night
- 80 UHF channels, voice announcements and a backlit LCD display that is easy to read
- Up to 20 hours of battery life depending on usage
The UH45 Max is clearly aimed at families, casual users and people doing everyday activities such as outings, camping, theme parks, markets or simply communicating around the house or building. It is easy to operate and light enough for kids to carry, while still offering safety-focused features like Kid Zone Plus.

The UH610 Max Series, which I tested more extensively, is better suited to adults needing extra range and a more rugged feel.
With higher power output and longer stated range, it’s designed for caravanning, road trips and outdoor use where you might be further apart or dealing with more challenging terrain. In use, it felt solid, dependable and well matched to more demanding scenarios than the kid-friendly UH45 Max.

Pricing for the UH45 Max range starts from $36.95 for single units, with multi-pack options available for families or groups who want matching sets.
The UH610 Max Series is priced higher but offers extra capability for those who need it.
Overall, I liked both units for what they are designed to do. The UH45 Max Series is a practical choice if you want a small, uncomplicated walkie talkie for family and everyday use, while the UH6xx Max Series suits adults who need a tougher, longer-range option for travel and outdoor activities.
