Sarawak Sets Record

Kuching, Dec 29: Sarawak will usher in 2026 with a historic Guinness World Records (GWR) achievement, following a record-setting flight from Tanjung Datu to Lawas that traced major landmarks across the state and showcased its vast scale and connectivity.
The official Guinness World Records title will be announced during the Countdown 2026 celebration at Kuching Waterfront on 31 December 2025, positioning Sarawak on the global stage as it prepares to welcome visitors for Visit Malaysia Year 2026.
Recognised as the global authority on record-breaking achievements, Guinness World Records provides independent verification and international credibility to milestones across countries and industries.
Securing a title places Sarawak among an elite group of record-holders worldwide and serves as a collective point of pride for its people.
The record-setting journey, described as a “magical” flight across Sarawak’s diverse landscapes, is being promoted not only as a technological feat but also as a bold statement of the state’s ambition and role as the Gateway to Borneo.
“This achievement goes beyond setting a world record. It reflects Sarawak’s readiness to lead with bold ideas, innovation and confidence as we step into 2026,” said Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Sarawak.
“Announcing this Guinness World Record on New Year’s Eve is a strong signal of the momentum Sarawak is building as we prepare to welcome global travellers.”
The Countdown 2026 event, organised by the Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Sarawak, will feature a curated mix of local, national and international performances.
The night will culminate in a musical fireworks display at midnight, symbolising Sarawak’s confident and ambitious entry into the new year.
As the state moves toward 2026, the Guinness World Records achievement is being framed as a defining moment in Sarawak’s tourism story—showcasing how innovation, storytelling and scale can combine to create a compelling global narrative rooted in its identity as the Gateway to Borneo.
