SmartThings adds Matter Cameras

Sydney, Dec 22: Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. says its SmartThings smart home platform will support Matter-compatible cameras, after announcing SmartThings now supports the Matter 1.5 smart home standard.
Samsung said SmartThings updates will begin rolling out from January 2026, expanding the platform’s existing Matter device support—currently covering lights, door locks, switches and sensors—to include cameras.
“Samsung aims to ensure that products and services built on different brands and protocols deliver a unified experience through SmartThings,” said Jaeyeon Jung, Executive Vice President and Head of SmartThings Team at Samsung Electronics. “We will continue to expand our support for industry standards, including Matter, and further strengthen collaboration to drive new customer experiences.”
Matter 1.5, announced by the Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA) in November, adds camera support to the Matter specification, alongside enhanced closure operations for compatible blinds, awnings and garage doors, and improvements to energy management.
Samsung said Matter 1.5 camera support is designed for a range of smart home use cases, including indoor and outdoor security cameras and video doorbells, and may enable features such as live video streaming, two-way communication, motion detection, event history, and pan-tilt-zoom controls on select devices.
The company said the update should also simplify development for camera manufacturers, allowing Matter-based cameras to integrate with SmartThings without the need to build a separate custom API.
Samsung added it has worked with IoT device makers including Aqara, Eve and Ulticam on Matter camera development, with products expected to roll out in select global markets from March 2026.
SmartThings already supports smart home camera experiences through partnerships with brands such as Aqara, Arlo, Hue and Ring across multiple protocols and connection methods. Samsung said the addition of Matter cameras will expand user choice and help people use SmartThings for monitoring homes remotely, checking on pets, and creating routines linked to connected doorbells.
