Sydney, Nov 28: Sydney’s Barangaroo foreshore is set to transform into a city beach cinema from today as Mov’in Bed returns with 280 tonnes of white sand, 150 beds and a season of blockbusters screening under the stars through to April 2026.
The pop-up, located at Harbour Park in Central Barangaroo, replaces traditional cinema seating with rows of queen and king-size beds laid out directly on the sand, giving audiences a waterfront movie experience with the Sydney skyline as a backdrop.
Organisers describe the concept as “a city beach built from scratch each summer,” combining a full-scale outdoor cinema with what they claim is the most comfortable seating in Australia’s open-air cinema scene.

A Beach, a Bed and a Big Screen
On arrival, patrons walk across a man-made beach before being shown to their bed for the night. Each bed comes with pillows, a doona, blankets, a small side table and wireless headsets for the film audio.
Instead of queuing at a snack bar, guests scan a QR code to order food and drinks from an on-site open kitchen, with chef-made pizzas, burgers, share plates and cocktails delivered directly to the sand.
During the media preview night, this reporter watched Now You See Me, Now You Don’t, with the screening starting at 8.31pm and finishing at around 10.15pm. The bed itself lived up to the promise: comfortable enough that it was easy to doze off for a few moments, and a far cry from the usual folding chair or picnic rug.

A Mixed but Memorable Experience
While the core concept—beds on sand by the harbour with restaurant-style food delivered to you—worked exactly as advertised, the media night also highlighted one unavoidable factor: the weather.
Midway through the evening, a mini storm rolled in. Winds picked up across the foreshore, sending blankets and tissues flying from one side of the venue. As gusts strengthened, fine sand was blown into the faces of guests lying on the beds.
At one point, sunglasses became an unlikely necessity at night simply to keep sand out of the eyes.
A practical suggestion for organisers arising from the preview is the possible provision of simple transparent goggles on windy nights, which could significantly improve comfort without changing the character of the event.
Despite the weather, service remained smooth. Staff continued to deliver meals to the beds, headsets worked reliably throughout, and patrons were able to move freely to the back of the cinema area to stretch or use the bathroom without disrupting others.

Who It Suits – and Who It Doesn’t
Mov’in Bed appears particularly well suited to couples seeking a relaxed date night, groups of friends, and families with older children who can stay up late and cope with cooler harbour breezes.
However, the conditions are less ideal for very young children. On the media night, one woman who had brought a baby in a pram left within roughly 20 minutes of the film starting, underscoring how cold and windy the foreshore can become after dark, even in late spring and summer.
The beds, blankets and doonas offer a cosy experience for adults and older kids, but parents considering bringing toddlers or infants may wish to think carefully about weather, screening time and the open-air setting.

Programming: Blockbusters, Musicals and Christmas Classics
The 2025–2026 season opens with romance title Regretting You, before rolling into a mix of action, drama and musical features including Tron: Ares, Twinless, One Battle After Another, A Big Bold Beautiful Journey, Wicked For Good and Kiss of the Spider Woman. Later in the season, blockbusters such as Now You See Me Now You Don’t and Fantastic Four are scheduled.

From mid-December, the beach takes on a festive flavour with a slate of Christmas favourites including Home Alone, Love Actually, Die Hard, Elf and The Nightmare Before Christmas.
Screenings run from Wednesday to Sunday nights, with gates opening at 6.00pm and films typically beginning after sunset, around 8.15pm.

Tickets and Access
Mov’in Bed has kept its pricing structure unchanged for four years, positioning the experience as “accessible luxury” for Sydneysiders.
Tickets start at $12 per person for sand positions, where guests can bring their own blanket and enjoy the movie from the beach itself. For those wanting a more comfortable experience, queen-size beds are available from $45 per person. Guests seeking an elevated night out can opt for the VIP package, priced from $75 per person, which includes sparkling wine, butler service, unlimited gourmet popcorn and premium viewing areas.
Beds accommodate 2–3 guests, with dog-friendly options available and small beds provided for pets alongside their owners.
Located in Harbour Park at Central Barangaroo, the venue is reachable via Metro, ferry, bus and train, placing it within easy access of the CBD and surrounding suburbs.
