Review of Kokoroya Pagewood

By June Ramli

Sydney, Nov 22: “Kokoro” means heart or mind, and “ya” means home — a fitting name for Kokoroya, a Japanese restaurant that prides itself on warm hospitality, precision, and seasonal ingredients.
Located within the newly launched Meriton Pagewood Precinct, Kokoroya Pagewood has quickly established itself as a standout dining choice, and my recent visit confirmed why it has been drawing steady crowds since opening.
On a chilly Friday night, the restaurant was buzzing with families, couples, and groups of friends, most opting to sit inside to enjoy the cosy atmosphere.
The space blends modern Japanese aesthetics with warmth, featuring wood textures, soft lighting, and an inviting layout that feels both polished and relaxed.
Instead of the usual QR code system, Kokoroya provides tablets at each table for ordering — a convenient touch for diners whose phone batteries may be running low.

The interface is intuitive, making the ordering experience smooth and fuss-free.
Service throughout the evening was fast and attentive.
Plates were cleared promptly, dishes arrived quickly, and staff checked in at the right moments.
I was also introduced to the team behind the kitchen: Head Chef David Guntoro, sous chef Philbert, and long-time server Novi.
Their passion and coordination were evident in the precision of every dish that left the kitchen.
Among the dishes I sampled were the Umami Squid, dried and lightly torched with soy mayonnaise; Wagyu Nigiri, offering buttery slices of Wagyu atop sushi rice; and the Prawn Tempura, which arrived crisp and airy.
The Fisherman’s Scallop, served two pieces per portion, was torched with cheese, teriyaki sauce, and mayonnaise, crowned with roe for added richness.

Kokoroya’s easy-to-use tablet menu allows guests to browse and order dishes with just a tap.

I ended the meal with an indulgent Affogato Espresso × Frangelico, paired with Hokkaido milk soft-serve, before moving on to the heartier Fisherman Hotpot — a comforting bowl of udon noodles with assorted seafood and egg — and a Mini Udon, a simple and satisfying option with seaweed, spring onions, and fish cake.
The food arrived swiftly and was so enjoyable that I nearly forgot to photograph the dishes, a testament to how well-executed they were.
Most dishes fall between $12 and $25, offering strong value for money given the freshness of ingredients, generous portions, and overall quality.

Based on the chef’s recommendations and what I observed around the dining room, I’m already planning a return visit for the M9 Wagyu bowls, grilled eel don, Uni Ikura Don, Tokyo-grade sashimi platters, and Kokoroya’s newly introduced Japanese breakfast menu — a feature quickly gaining popularity among early diners.

Kokoroya’s dining space offers a relaxed yet elegant setting, perfect for families, couples, and groups.

Kokoroya Pagewood appeals to a wide range of patrons: families seeking wholesome Japanese comfort food, sushi enthusiasts, udon lovers, couples looking for a relaxed dinner spot, and anyone exploring the precinct’s growing dining scene.
The restaurant anchors a diverse culinary strip that spans flavours from Tokyo to Hanoi. In the same area, Hong Kong Café serves cha chaan teng-inspired classics, Nem Viet brings northern Vietnamese favourites, and Thai Thae adds fresh Thai cuisine to the mix.
Johnny Gio’s opens its first licensed venue here, while well-loved names such as Chargrill Charlie’s, Al Aseel, C9 Desserts, and Leaf Café round out the offering.

With new parks, children’s activities, and generous open spaces, the Meriton Pagewood Precinct is quickly becoming Sydney’s next all-day dining and leisure destination.
Meanwhile, as for the restaurant that I visited today – Kokoroya Pagewood, itself succeeds in delivering exceptional Japanese cuisine paired with warmth, speed, and finesse.
The freshness of its ingredients, polished service, and inviting ambience make it a standout addition to the precinct.
It is the kind of restaurant you leave already planning your next visit.
