EV Sales Hit Record

Sydney, Aug 14: Australia has recorded its strongest quarter yet for electric vehicle (EV) sales, with the Electric Vehicle Council urging governments to maintain existing incentives and policies to sustain the momentum.
New figures from the Australian Automobile Association show 41,146 EVs were sold nationwide in the second quarter of 2025. This total includes 29,244 battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and 11,902 plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), representing 13.1 per cent of all new car sales for the period.
The result marks a 37 per cent jump from the same quarter in 2024, when 30,028 EVs were sold, accounting for 9.59 per cent of sales.
Electric Vehicle Council CEO Julie Delvecchio welcomed the growth but warned that the market remains in its early stages, with sales still well below the 30 per cent share needed for a self-sustaining transition.
She cautioned against proposals to remove the fringe benefits tax (FBT) exemption or introduce road user charges, saying such measures could stall the shift to cleaner transport.
According to Delvecchio, the combination of federal incentives and the New Vehicle Efficiency Standard is driving greater choice for consumers, with electric options now available across all vehicle types. She emphasised the broader environmental, economic, and social benefits of continued EV adoption, including emissions reduction, improved air quality, and reduced reliance on foreign oil.
