Amazon’s $20B Australia Expansion

Sydney, June 15: Amazon Web Services (AWS) has unveiled plans to invest a record-breaking AU$20 billion in Australia between 2025 and 2029, marking the largest publicly announced technology infrastructure investment in the country’s history. The initiative aims to significantly expand AWS’s data centre presence and strengthen Australia’s capabilities in cloud computing and artificial intelligence (AI).
The multi-billion-dollar commitment supports growing customer demand for scalable cloud services and AI tools, and aligns with the Australian Government’s ambitions to enhance productivity and economic growth through AI innovation. AWS will continue to deliver on local data residency and compliance, empowering hundreds of thousands of local customers and partners with access to cutting-edge technologies.
The investment builds on AWS’s long-standing presence in Australia, which began in 2012. In recent years, the company has rolled out key infrastructure milestones, including the launch of new AWS Regions, Local Zones, and generative AI platforms such as Amazon Bedrock. In a major national security development, AWS is also working with the Australian Government to deliver a “Top Secret” cloud platform to bolster intelligence and defence capabilities.
To support this infrastructure expansion, Amazon will invest in three new solar farms across Victoria and Queensland. Operated by European Energy, these projects will collectively provide over 170 megawatts of renewable energy. Once operational, Amazon’s total renewable energy footprint in Australia will span 11 projects, projected to generate more than 1.4 million megawatt hours annually—enough to power nearly 290,000 homes.
From 2020 to 2022, Amazon had already invested approximately AU$467 million in Australian renewable energy projects. In 2024, it ranked as the third-largest corporate purchaser of renewable energy in the country and remains the global leader in this domain. A study by Accenture further revealed that shifting AI workloads to AWS can cut carbon emissions by up to 94% compared to on-premises data centres.
The investment also supports a broader national strategy to upskill the workforce. AWS has trained over 400,000 people in Australia since 2017 and plans to continue scaling its efforts through initiatives like AWS AI Spring Australia. This includes targeted programs such as the AWS Generative AI Accelerator for startups and AWS AI Launchpad for enterprises, designed to boost AI adoption across sectors.
The investment underscores Amazon’s commitment to driving innovation and digital transformation across public and private sectors. Major Australian organisations—ranging from financial institutions and healthcare leaders to startups and creative platforms—already rely on AWS infrastructure and AI services.
With its expanded data centre footprint, increased renewable energy commitments, and enhanced AI training programs, AWS is poised to play a key role in shaping Australia’s digital economy and future workforce.
