Telstra Misled Belong Users
The Federal Court has found Telstra misled nearly 9,000 Belong broadband customers by not informing them of a reduced upload speed from 40Mbps to 20Mbps.
The migration occurred in late 2020 without customer notification or price adjustments, despite Telstra paying $7 less per month for the lower-speed service.
Telstra admitted to misleading 2,785 customers who were promised 40Mbps upload speeds but did not receive them. A further 6,112 customers were also affected, as they reasonably expected the service to remain unchanged. The company acknowledged its failure in 2021 and issued a one-off $90 credit to affected users.
The ACCC, which launched proceedings in December 2022, is seeking penalties, consumer redress, and other orders. The Court will determine the penalty at a later date.
