Lorna Watson’s journey to leading the beloved series Sister Boniface Mysteries is nothing short of extraordinary. In an exclusive interview with DailyStraits.com, the talented actress shared insights about her unexpected rise to fame, the challenges and joys of playing Sister Boniface, and what fans can look forward to in the show’s fourth season.
“This part came from an episode of Father Brown. I played Sister Boniface in one episode, and it was written by Jude Tyndall. Ten years later, my agent called and said, ‘You’re not going to believe this, but they want your character to have her own series.’ I couldn’t believe it until we started filming,” Watson said.
Watson described the experience as “extraordinary,” noting how rare it is for a single-episode character to evolve into the lead of an entire series. “It’s the kind of story that gives other actors hope. You never know in this industry.”

A Dream Role in an Ever-Evolving Show

Watson, who is now filming the fourth season of Sister Boniface Mysteries, explained how the role has been both a challenge and a joy.
“I’d never played a nun or a forensic expert before, so it was exciting to step into something so new. Over the years, I’ve gone on a journey with her and continue to learn more about the character.”
She added that the comedic and dramatic elements of the show keep her engaged.
“In my comedy background, I’ve mostly played rather silly characters. Playing Sister Boniface, the smartest person in the room, has been a refreshing change.”

From Fake Snow to Heatwaves

The Christmas special, which kicks off season four, holds a special place in Watson’s heart.
“This is our second Christmas special. Last year, we used up all the fake snow on a train-set episode. This year, filming during a heatwave in the warmest costumes was a unique experience. But Christmas specials feel magical and bring out the child in everyone.”
Watson also shared a memorable moment involving a turkey named Ralph.
“We got to know Ralph quite well. He’s a seasoned performer and added to the fun. Shooting the Christmas special was a joyful way to start the season.”

A Show for the Times

Reflecting on the enduring appeal of the show, Watson believes its blend of drama, comedy, and lighthearted escapism resonates with audiences.
“The world can be a scary place, and Sister Boniface Mysteries offers a warm, comforting escape. It’s puzzle-solving with heart, and it leaves you with a good feeling.”

More Mysteries and Surprises in Season Four

While keeping details under wraps, Watson teased what’s to come.
“We have some fantastic episodes lined up, including an homage to a Batman and Robin-style TV show and a game-show-themed mystery. There are also lovely journeys for our characters, particularly Reverend Mother Adrian, whose relationship with Sister Boniface takes on new dimensions this season.”
When asked about her dream storyline, Watson said she’d love to explore Sister Boniface’s family.
“She has a sister who is a professional musician, and I think they don’t get along. It would be fascinating to see that dynamic.”

Life Beyond the Habit

In addition to acting, Watson has been busy with other creative pursuits.
“I also do a lot of writing. My first children’s book came out in July, and I’ve just finished writing the second. My partner, Marcus Garvey, and I have also co-written a script that’s being picked up by a production company. It’s exciting to explore different avenues.”
As the interview wrapped up, Watson shared why Australian audiences should tune in to Sister Boniface Mysteries. “It’s a quintessentially English show set in the stunning Cotswolds. It’s lighthearted, clever, and full of charm. We even have an Australian guest star in the Christmas special! It’s the perfect show to brighten your day.”
With eight fresh episodes of season four set to air in 2025, Watson remains excited about the future of Sister Boniface Mysteries. “I’m learning all the time and loving every moment. I hope to continue playing this role for as long as I can.”
