Penang Semiconductor Push

Globetronics Technology Bhd (GTB) has partnered with Invest Penang to bolster Penang’s semiconductor ecosystem through the Penang Silicon Design @5km+ initiative. This collaboration involves GTB supporting chip design houses with package design, process development, and engineering sample builds, aiming to scale to mass production. Invest Penang will coordinate stakeholders to attract investments and create jobs. The partnership emphasizes Penang’s position as a global semiconductor hub.

Betamek Names New COO

Betamek Berhad has appointed Shahrel Mohd Zain as Chief Operating Officer, effective December 9, 2024. With over 30 years of experience in engineering and manufacturing leadership at companies like Carsem, Osram, and Coherent Corporation, Shahrel will focus on enhancing Betamek’s operational efficiency and driving innovation in the automotive electronics sector. His appointment supports the company’s expansion efforts in the ASEAN market.

Alpro Expands to Indonesia

Alpro Pharmacy, Malaysia’s largest prescription pharmacy chain, has launched ‘Apotek Alpro’ in Indonesia, marking its first international expansion.
With over 200 outlets in Jakarta, Apotek Alpro aims to enhance healthcare access with genuine medications and fast delivery services. Led by CEO Ph.
Lee Yin Chen and a dedicated leadership team, the venture focuses on medication safety and consumer trust.
An MoU with 22 local universities supports pharmacist education and workforce development, aligning with Alpro’s mission to improve regional healthcare.

Alibaba Cloud Fuels Innovation

Alibaba Cloud is driving AI adoption across industries in Asia, achieving double-digit growth in public cloud services and triple-digit AI product revenue growth for five consecutive quarters.
Its collaborations include Lightblue in Japan for Japanese-language LLMs, Pictureworks in Malaysia for advanced imaging solutions, and Atlas in Singapore for travel tech innovations.
Notable initiatives also include DRUNKGPT for skincare brand Drunk Elephant in China and iNutrition, an AI nutrition assistant by Haleon China.
These projects highlight Alibaba Cloud’s role in enhancing efficiency, customer experiences, and technological advancement across sectors.

MR. TOY Racing Event

MR. TOY, part of the MR D.I.Y. Group, is hosting its first-ever national “Remote Control Car Tournament” for Malaysian parents and children.
The event features RM10,000 in prizes, with the champion team winning RM3,000 in vouchers. Participants race in two-player teams, with winners advancing from state-level competitions (14–15 December) to the Grand Final at MR. D.I.Y. PLUS IPC Shopping Centre, Damansara, Selangor.
Pre-tournament practice sessions are available from 7–13 December at selected MR. TOY stores.
