Australian Boomers, also known as the ‘SKI’ generation (Spending the Kids’ Inheritance), are shifting travel trends by favoring adventure and cultural immersion over traditional tourist hotspots.
A report from Forward Travel highlights a significant rise in interest among Australians aged 55+ for destinations like the Maldives (up 257%), Bangladesh (165%), and Colombia (145%), while formerly popular locations such as the Cook Islands and China have seen declines of up to 97%.
David Smyth, founder and director of Forward Travel, noted the trend among clients embracing immersive and adventurous experiences, from trekking in South America to exploring remote jungles in Borneo and preparing for safaris in Africa.
Destinations like the Congo and Colombia are capturing this demographic’s attention due to their unique offerings.
The Congo’s untouched rainforests and opportunities for gorilla trekking provide a raw, authentic connection to nature, while Colombia’s colonial charm, natural beauty, and thriving cultural scene appeal to seasoned travelers.
The report attributes these shifting preferences to factors like political stability, health index scores, climate, and crime rates, shaping how over 55s choose destinations that align with their desire for meaningful travel experiences.
