Digital Tourism Future

The Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) celebrated the conclusion of Cohort 3 of its Digital Tourism Innovation Lab (DTIL). The programme supports digital transformation in Malaysia’s tourism sector, showcasing innovative pitches from startups focused on reshaping the industry.
Held at Common Ground Bukit Bintang, the event saw participation from 24 startups, part of an 8-week accelerator facilitated by MDEC and 1337 Ventures. The initiative, aligned with the Ministry of Digital’s goals, offers mentorship, funding, and expert collaboration. Some startups have already secured funding and expanded regionally.
Tourism is crucial to Malaysia’s economy, with global tourism GDP contributions projected to hit USD16 trillion by 2034. MDEC aims to position Malaysia as a leader in travel tech through investments in AI, IoT, and immersive technologies ahead of Visit Malaysia Year 2026.

Midwest Composites Triumphs

Midwest Composites Sdn. Bhd. secured the Grand Winner title at Japan’s MakiChalle 2024, earning a ¥1 million prize (MYR28K).
The recognition highlights the company’s advancements in sustainable composite materials and opens doors to collaborations with Japanese industries.
Hosted by Makinohara City, the competition focuses on sustainability-driven innovations, attracting 149 startups, including 40 international entrants.
Midwest Composites aims to expand its BioComposite technologies and establish eco-friendly partnerships in Japan, strengthening its global impact on green manufacturing. The award ceremony was held on November 7.

Solarvest Expands in Vietnam

Solarvest Holdings Berhad has launched its Powervest solar financing program in Vietnam, offering tailored solutions to address the financial barriers to solar energy adoption.
The program, introduced during the DEX Connex Vietnam 2024 by MDEC, supports businesses transitioning to renewable energy under Vietnam’s Direct Power Purchase Agreement framework.
Powervest provides two options: Powerflex, for financing or co-owning solar PV systems, and Powerlease, allowing businesses to lease systems and purchase electricity at a tariff. Solarvest also signed an MoU with Malaysia’s Finhero to develop Vietnam’s first solar financing fintech platform, simplifying solar financing for Vietnamese companies.

Malaysia’s Green Economy Drive

At COP29, the Malaysia Pavilion showcased 26 sessions featuring 39 speakers, attracting 910 attendees. Key discussions included climate financing, just energy transition, and sustainable palm oil production, aligned with Malaysia’s net-zero goals by 2050.
Notable initiatives highlighted Malaysia’s leadership in ASEAN’s green economy, with partnerships like the ASEAN-UK Green Transition Fund supporting regional sustainability efforts. Discussions also emphasized the role of ESG principles in energy transition and innovative tech solutions like the ASEAN Power Grid.
The Pavilion, led by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability, is supported by prominent Malaysian entities, fostering cross-border collaboration and green innovation.

MASkargo, Qatar Cargo Unite

MASkargo and Qatar Airways Cargo have launched a strategic partnership to enhance global cargo connectivity. Since October 1, the collaboration has moved 2,400 tonnes of cargo, including perishables and pharmaceuticals.
Qatar Airways’ Boeing 777 flights now link Doha and Kuala Lumpur twice weekly, while MASkargo’s A330 freighters connect to Sydney and Melbourne, offering swift 8-hour transfer times. This partnership expands access to key global markets, strengthens regional trade, and improves capacity across Europe, the GCC, and Asia-Pacific.
The agreement builds on the airlines’ codeshare and oneworld alliance ties, showcasing their commitment to seamless cargo and passenger solutions.

MR D.I.Y. PLUS Opens

MR D.I.Y. Group [M] Berhad unveiled its newest MR D.I.Y. PLUS flagship store at The Mall, Mid Valley Southkey, Johor Bahru.
The 33,000 sq ft store, the brand’s 1,300th outlet, features a “Jewel” theme celebrating Johor’s heritage and modern vibrancy. Highlights include a gemstone-inspired entrance, interactive LED screens, a playground, and a retailtainment zone.
Offering over 17,000 products from MR D.I.Y., MR DOLLAR, MR TOY, and EMTOP, the store combines immersive shopping experiences with affordability. Celebratory promotions run from November 18 to 24.
