Green Energy Revolution in Azerbaijan

Baku, Nov 17: Azerbaijan has taken a significant step in its renewable energy journey with the announcement of a 5.4 MW solar photovoltaic (PV) facility at the Port of Baku.
The project, a collaboration between Citaglobal Bhd and the Port of Baku, marks the nation’s first commercial renewable energy initiative integrating solar power with a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS).
This transformative effort, spearheaded by Tiza Green Energy LLC—a joint venture between Tiza Global Azerbaijan LLC and Citaglobal Renewable Energy Sdn Bhd—was formalized during COP 29’s Green Energy Day.
Distinguished attendees included Datuk Dr. Ching Thoo a/l Kim, Secretary General of Malaysia’s Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability, and His Excellency Ambassador Ahmad Kamrizamil Mohd Riza, Malaysia’s Ambassador to Azerbaijan.
The project aligns with Azerbaijan’s ambitious goal of increasing renewable energy’s share in its energy mix to over 60 per cent by 2050.
With a 21-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) guaranteeing fixed tariffs, the initiative ensures predictable energy costs and reduces reliance on the grid, setting a benchmark for sustainable practices in the region.

Innovative Energy Solutions
The multi-phase project begins with rooftop solar PV installations, progressing to ground-mounted systems equipped with Citaglobal’s MYBESS technology.
This system enables the port to store and utilize excess energy, ensuring optimal efficiency and minimal reliance on external power sources.
The initiative also addresses the port’s annual electricity needs entirely through green energy, significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
Tan Sri Dr. Norza Zakaria, President of Tiza Green Energy LLC, highlighted the project’s role in advancing Azerbaijan’s renewable energy landscape.
“The solution that we are implementing not only maximises clean energy use on-site but does
so at a cost competitive tariff, demonstrating our shared commitment to sustainable, cost-
effective energy solutions,” he said.
Dr. Taleh Ziyadov, Director-General of the Port of Baku, expressed confidence in the partnership’s impact on sustainability.
“Our strategy is to achieve zero emissions by 2035, and I am confident that our partnership with Tiza Green Energy will position us as leaders in sustainable practices, significantly reducing our Scope 2 emissions. The integration of solar and BESS technology brings unprecedented energy management capabilities, reinforcing our commitment to both economic and environmental stewardship.”

Sustainability in Action
Spanning 400 hectares, the Port of Baku plays a pivotal role as a transport and logistics hub in the Eurasian region. Its ongoing expansion aims to enhance capacity while maintaining a strong focus on sustainability.
Measures include energy efficiency improvements, waste management systems, and local environmental initiatives.
This renewable energy project, coupled with the port’s Climate Action Plan targeting zero emissions by 2035, underscores Baku’s commitment to climate resilience.
As host of COP 29, the city solidifies its leadership in addressing climate change through innovation and sustainable practices.
The project not only signals a greener future for Azerbaijan but also provides a replicable model for renewable energy integration across the nation.
