Malaysia Champions Sustainability at COP29

Kuala Lumpur, Nov 12: As it gears up to lead ASEAN in 2025, Malaysia reinforces its commitment to sustainability with a prominent presence at COP29.
At the heart of Malaysia’s pavilion theme, “Shift for Sustainability – Climate Action Now!”, the nation is highlighting significant climate action milestones and advocating for intergovernmental collaboration on green initiatives.
This aligns with Malaysia’s broader climate goals and supports the theme of its upcoming ASEAN Chairmanship, “Inclusivity and Sustainability.”
Malaysia’s push for strengthened ASEAN cooperation on sustainable development, environmental protection, and social equity aligns with the ASEAN Community Vision 2025, aiming to accelerate regional progress toward net-zero emissions.
Datuk Dr. Ching Thoo, Secretary General of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability (NRES), emphasized the need for a unified regional approach.
“The global climate crisis demands a unified approach, and today, at COP29, we remain fully committed to our comprehensive strategy emphasizing climate-conscious policies and sustainable economic growth,” he said.
Strategically positioned in the Blue Zone at COP29, Malaysia’s pavilion acts as a platform for promoting collective action in climate finance resilience, renewable energy, carbon markets, biodiversity protection, and the circular economy.
This dynamic setting is set to inspire transformative discussions over two weeks, with a lineup of influential speakers and panel discussions addressing pressing environmental challenges and resilient initiatives for Malaysia and the broader Southeast Asian region.
A distinguished panel representing various sectors, including the Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA), Tenaga Nasional Berhad, and the Malaysia Green Technology and Climate Change Corporation, will explore pathways to climate-resilient cities through collaboration with regional and global partners.
The program also features a regional panel moderated by GIZ ASEAN EU-German Climate Action Programme, with contributions from Malaysia, Brunei, Indonesia, and Singapore, showcasing ASEAN’s commitment to new cycles of Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC).
The agenda will close with expert-led presentations and fireside chats focused on transboundary climate risks in Southeast Asia, featuring experts from the Global Resilience Partnership, Stockholm Environment Institute, and Boston Consulting Group (BCG), all working to outline collaborative strategies for managing climate impacts across the region.
Spearheaded by the Ministry of Natural Resources, Environment and Climate Change, Malaysia’s pavilion at COP29 is organized in collaboration with the Malaysian Green Technology and Climate Change Corporation (MGTC) and supported by corporate partners including Tenaga Nasional Berhad, PETRONAS, Malaysian Palm Oil Council, and Malayan Banking Berhad, among others.
