Fox’s Way Home Review

By June Ramli

Sydney, Nov 8: BeXide Inc’s latest title, The Fox’s Way Home, brings a unique twist to mystery gaming that combines anime aesthetics with an eerie ritualistic dance.
Available on Steam, this game invites players to step into a world where memory, keen observation, and a sharp eye for deception are essential to returning to the real world.
Setting up the game was easy, even on my iMac, which was a pleasant surprise given the usual Microsoft exclusivity of many gaming titles.
Playing on an Apple platform with Japanese voiceovers and English subtitles enriched the experience, allowing me to enjoy Uchida Maaya’s captivating voice performance as the mysterious fox shrine maiden.
The core mechanic centers around spotting the difference between the real and the fake fox maiden across eight ritual dances.
Each round, a mysterious apparition tries to trick players by impersonating the fox maiden’s appearance and movement.
The challenge is to carefully observe each detail and identify subtle changes that reveal an impostor.
The goal is simple yet demanding: detect the imposter eight times in a row to progress.

If you fail, you’re sent back to the beginning, adding to the game’s difficulty.
Visually, The Fox’s Way Home shines, with its 3D characters and mystical, moonlit settings.
The fox maiden, a mesmerizing character with fox-like fangs and a graceful yet unsettling dance, is designed to captivate and deceive.
Her appearances are animated meticulously, heightening the suspense of each round.
However, while the ritual dances themselves are well-crafted and genuinely test one’s attention to detail, the repetitive structure can grow tedious.
The eight-round requirement means that failing at any point can feel frustrating, especially with no added hooks or incentives that deepen the storyline or introduce new elements.
For players interested in anime and VTuber aesthetics, this game is a treat.
The fox maiden’s shrine and her deceptive dances are atmospheric, and the game’s Apparition Encyclopedia adds a collectible element that encourages replay.
Capturing photos of each imposter dance for the encyclopedia provides a sense of progression, with hints of a secret ending for those determined to uncover every variation of the false fox maiden.
This aspect brings some satisfaction, though the primary gameplay loop might benefit from more varied challenges or rewards after each ritual.
At $15.99 on Steam, The Fox’s Way Home is a unique addition to the mystery genre, blending supernatural themes with a demanding memory challenge.
While it may not keep every player engaged for extended periods due to its repetitive nature, it’s a worthwhile play for those who enjoy subtle puzzle games and a challenge of perception.
With its visual appeal and intriguing concept, The Fox’s Way Home is an enjoyable experience, though one that might have benefited from a more varied approach to gameplay.
