Melbourne, Nov 1: Getty Images has committed to refunding around $78,000 to over 200 customers following complaints that its iStock subscription cancellation fees exceeded the terms outlined in its online policies, according to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC).
The ACCC’s concern centers on fees applied between November 2023 and February 2024, where Getty Images allegedly charged customers 50 percent of their remaining annual subscription cost upon cancellation after a one-month free trial.
This charge, described as an “administrative fee” in the online terms, was deemed potentially misleading as it exceeded what customers might reasonably expect.
Complaints also highlighted potential confusion from iStock’s website, which showed monthly pricing without displaying the total annual cost, further contributing to misunderstandings about subscription terms. Getty Images has since updated its pricing information and now provides notifications before free trials end.
The ACCC expressed satisfaction with Getty Images’ decision to amend its website and offer refunds, stating that no further enforcement action will be pursued.
Eligible customers will receive emails regarding their refunds, which Getty will process using current customer records.
In cases where refunds are not processed automatically, customers will be notified to reach out directly to Getty Images.
The ACCC also advises customers to be cautious of unsolicited contacts claiming to update payment information and to verify contact details independently.
