Sydney, Sept 26: Music legend A.R. Rahman has built an iconic career blending Indian classical music with global influences, earning him recognition across the world. But the journey to fame wasn’t always easy for the Oscar-winning composer, who recently shared his thoughts on navigating the ups and downs of his career.
In a candid conversation with DailyStraits.com, Rahman reflected on the challenges of his early years, overcoming self-doubt, and the pivotal moments that defined his path. He also touched on the future of music and the role artificial intelligence may play in the industry.
In an exclusive interview, Rahman revealed personal stories about his rise to stardom, his family’s support, and how staying true to his roots kept him grounded through decades of success.

Overcoming Early Doubts
During the interview, Rahman opened up about his initial struggles in the music industry. “The first ten years were all about low self-esteem and rejection,” he said. His journey to recognition was far from smooth, but it was this period of uncertainty that fueled his desire to break away from the ordinary. A breakthrough moment came when one of India’s top directors approached him for a project, a chance Rahman calls a “destiny moment” that would change everything.
“Boredom with the usual motivated me to push myself further,” he shared, adding that his spiritual beliefs helped him stay focused and grounded during those difficult times.
Life Before Fame
Long before Rahman became a household name, he juggled school and working as a roadie, setting up keyboards for light music orchestras. “I did this to support my family after my father passed away,” he said. This experience not only provided him with a source of income but also opened doors into the professional music scene. “It was a way to get into the industry while learning the ropes,” he recalled.
Family Support and Defying Expectations
Rahman’s journey into music wasn’t without challenges, especially growing up in a traditional Asian household where academic success was often prioritized. But his mother, who had faith in his potential, encouraged him to pursue his passion for music. “My mother was very clear that academics weren’t my strength. She pushed me towards music, just like my father had,” he shared. Looking back, Rahman is thankful for her support, as it allowed him to fully commit to honing his craft.
Breaking Into the Industry
As Rahman’s career progressed, the Indian film industry became the launching pad for his music. “India’s film industry was the biggest platform for my work. My first film won national awards, setting a very high bar for me,” he noted. Soon, top directors were vying to collaborate with him, helping him carve out a diverse portfolio that spanned both classical and commercial music.
AI in Music: A New Frontier
When asked about the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in the future of music, Rahman expressed a mix of curiosity and caution. While he acknowledges that AI can assist in music production and technical tasks, he firmly believes that the “human element” will always be at the heart of music. “People love the imperfections, the human errors—that’s what makes music real,” he said, emphasizing that while AI may have its place, it will never replace the emotional connection musicians create with their audience.
Looking Ahead
As Rahman prepares for his upcoming concert tour in Australia, he’s excited to engage with a new generation of fans. “There’s a new generation discovering my music, and it’s more than just about language; it’s about collaboration, nostalgia, and excitement,” he shared.
Reflecting on his journey, Rahman credits every phase— from his early rejections to his global success— as vital in shaping who he is today, both as an artist and as a person.
