Support for Local Economy

Sydney, Aug 6: SPC CEO Neil Brimacombe is advocating for proactive measures to support consumers and local economies by encouraging the purchase of Australian-made products through efficient supply chains that reduce costs without compromising quality. Brimacombe highlighted the issue, stating, “It’s no surprise that consumers are choosing imported products because they’re often cheaper than our local options, which we’ve seen with the drop in demand for our peaches and pears.”
Exclusive research by The Daily Telegraph reveals a 14 per cent surge in the cost of a basket of basic groceries over the past year, with canned tomatoes among the hardest hit. As a major producer of Australian-made canned tomatoes, SPC is experiencing firsthand how rising prices impact households and is focused on finding long-term solutions.
Brimacombe emphasised the need for efficiency, “We need an efficient supply chain, so costs are reduced without compromising quality, and consumers can opt for high-quality, Australian-grown products.”
Extreme weather and climate change pose additional challenges. In 2022, the Goulburn Valley, a key sourcing area for SPC, faced severe flooding just days before the tomato harvest, resulting in significant crop loss. Brimacombe noted, “Food prices are rising faster than expected, and the extra costs and supply chain disruptions are making it even worse. We need to bring local suppliers and growers to the decision-making table to find sustainable solutions together. That’s the best way to support our local farmers.”
SPC is collaborating closely with local suppliers and growers in the Goulburn Valley through various programs, partnerships, and regular meetings to actively seek solutions for future-proofing supply and exploring innovative product ideas. Brimacombe concluded, “It’s about balancing what consumers need during tough times while also supporting our local farmers. A strong local supply chain means families get the best products, which is so important as we face these challenges.”

Platform for Women

Sydney, Aug 8: Joy, a new platform for Australian women over 50, has launched to help them forge lasting friendships. Joy allows women to meet face-to-face, share experiences, and build supportive relationships.
Phoebe Adams, Head of Joy, says, “I started Joy because I recognized that women’s friendship circles changed as they aged. This demographic of 50+ women was underserved by current options – no longer ‘school mums’, not yet pensioners or ‘older Australians’. These women still want fun experiences with peers and definitely don’t feel old.”
Operating in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Gold Coast, and Perth, Joy provides a supportive environment for genuine connections. Unlike other networks, Joy focuses on fostering meaningful relationships. Programs include health and fitness, mindfulness, and social gatherings, supporting women in all aspects of their lives.
“I, myself, moved from Sydney to Perth and had to really put myself out there to make friends – thankfully I’m still working and could build a network from a business standpoint first, but it was still hard, depressing, and it took time,” says Adams.
“My goal for Joy is to help women across the world make lasting friendships with other women that they can rely on.”
Upcoming events include High Tea at Vaucluse House, a Women’s Circle with Sharon Brockman, lunch at Hamptons City Beach, and virtual sessions like Journal Writing and Women Talking Finance.
The Joy membership, at $200 annually or $20 monthly, offers unlimited classes, priority event booking, wellness consultations, discounts, and access to a supportive community network. For more information, visit www.findjoy.com.au or @findjoycommunity.
