Box Office Boom

Sydney, June 17: The National Australian Box Office saw a significant boost over the weekend, reaching $15.15 million, a 34 per cent increase from the previous weekend. The top ten movies dominated the earnings, accounting for 93.1 per cent of the total.
Leading the pack was the new release “Inside Out 2,” which grossed $9.11 million, representing nearly 60 per cent of the total weekend box office takings. This film has set multiple records, including the highest global animated opening of all time at $295 million and the highest opening weekend of 2024, surpassing “Dune: Part Two” ($8.6 million). It also ranks as the third highest PIXAR opening weekend, fourth highest for Walt Disney Animation Studios/PIXAR, and the eighth highest animated opening weekend ever. Audience reception has been overwhelmingly positive, with Rotten Tomatoes scores of 92 per cent Certified Fresh Critics and 96 per cent Audience.
In second place, “Bad Boys: Ride or Die” earned $2.46 million in its second week, bringing its cumulative Australian box office to over $8 million. “The Garfield Movie” secured third place with $825,000, totaling $7.34 million in its third week. “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” took fourth place with $539,000 in its fourth week, reaching a cumulative $9.2 million. “IF” rounded out the top five with $328,000, totaling $8.61 million in its fifth week.

This week’s new releases include:

  • The Convert: A lay preacher’s faith is tested at a British settlement in the 1830s. Screening at select HOYTS locations.
  • Despicable Me 4: Gru returns with the Minions in a fresh saga. A must-see in D-BOX Motion Recliners.
  • Ghost: Rite Here Rite Now: A concert film capturing Ghost’s sold-out shows at Los Angeles’ Kia Forum. Screening at select HOYTS locations.
  • Umro Ayyar: A New Beginning: A Pakistani fantasy film based on the classical Urdu-Persian novel “Hamzanama.” Screening at select HOYTS locations.
  • 42nd Street The Musical: The beloved Broadway musical comes to the big screen in a grand production. Screening at select HOYTS locations for matinee sessions on June 21, 23, 24, and 25.
