3G Network Shutdown Alert
The Australian Small Business and Family Enterprise Ombudsman, Bruce Billson, is urging small, family, and farming businesses to prepare for the upcoming 3G network shutdown in August and September.
“The 3G switch-off will affect more than just your mobile phone signal,” Billson said.
“It could impact EFTPOS terminals, security systems, cameras, scanners, industrial routers, tablets, smartwatches, asset tracking tools, surveying instruments, water and environmental monitoring, and many wireless operating systems on farms.”
He further explained, “Even some 4G-enabled devices have components that rely on 3G. Users might not realize this until their devices stop working, so it’s crucial to have them checked. Small, family, and farming businesses need to act urgently to determine if they will be affected and upgrade their technology to avoid business disruptions.”
Billson advised businesses to contact their telecommunications provider or device manufacturer to confirm if their devices will be affected. He also warned about potential scams, recommending businesses only use trusted sources and links for information.
Telstra has announced it will delay its 3G network shutdown until August 31, 2024.
Optus plans to shut down its 3G network starting September 1, 2024, while TPG Telecom/Vodafone has already switched off its 3G network.
